Help!!! Camping trip comming up, got a problem.

Good afternoon every one,

I have a problem with my 450r. I'm sort of uncomfortable with taking the swing arm/Axel apart while not having parts ready right here in the garage. I was riding today to see how the bike runs and it was kind of running sluggish. Replaced the gas+oil+filters (air/oil) and it ran better. However the Axel feels pretty loose. When i climbed hills or rode over any sort of slope/bumps my brake rotor and sprocket/chain kept hitting the skidplate. I'm able to lift one of the tires and see some play in the swing arm.

I've included several photos here. What I'm seeing here... i think it's the rubber thing that protects the bearings to keep dirt/water out. Am i correct? I think the bearings needs to be repacked or replacing.... Wrong or correct?

If i'm wrong, please correct me. This is my first bike and i'm still learning haha. I need to get this fixed before camping trip. Thanks in advance.

your axle carrier is SHOT! i can see inside and there is no grease and i shouldnt even be able to see inside. also the carrier case is busted. you just need a entire new carrier and you should be good to go if it didnt scar up your axle too bad

Looks like you need a a complete bearing carrier... Hit up ebay. I just did one of the eastcoast atv carriers and was happy with it... I think they're in PA so it should take long to get to you.

Stay off it till you fix it, you'll cause more damage. I dont see the cir-clip in the pics... If thats gone let me hnow, I have a couple of them and shipping to you would be 2 days tops. pull it apart now and check the axle too... You might have wrecked that too... I have a G-force axle I could sell you cheap. I forget where you are in Maine... I'm in Wolfeboro NH

The rear brake stay is what is broken and you'll have to replace that seal too. If you're lucky, the carrier bearings are still ok but by the looks of it, you'll need to replace it. It's all part of the learning experience dude! You'll have to undo the axle nut and set nut (right hand threaded). Should be a tutorial on it somewhere close by.

Dam I'm slow typin today.

Thank you alanbmx. that was a very helpful, yet a great write up guide. It seems pretty straight forward.

I did not take apart the rear end today due to a messy garage and i did not want to lose anything. Just wanted to take it apart and put it together on the same day with a fresh mind. haha.

Well it looks like i wont be doing any more riding till next year :/ I just adopted two puppies on monday and i'm pretty broke right now due to vet bills... plus classes start on the 4th too :/

Thanks guys, I'm saving this thread to favorites and start letting the piggy bank grow again :) .

PS: bailyguns If you still have the axle in the winter.... I have a couple friends in NH and i go there from time to time during winter season. Maybe we'll meet.

ive never heard about the janssen carrier but it sounds good. the only carrier i would ever run over stock is the baldwin... they were the only 2 that have a hardened center tube. now i wonder what kind of bearings the baldwin has... im sure stock uses japanese bearings being its honda OEM

Jw, should i get an aftermarket one with grease fitting or stick with oem, repack it and install better bearings? i'm still new at this stuff. I dont see how an aftermarket carrier with grease fitting would fit in the stock swing arm.... I think the main reason why my bearing carrier went bad is because of the wheelies and jumps i've been pulling off. lol.

Any one using a certain brand/model and has good experience?

I might add an HRC kit this winter while i work on the rear end. But i wanna get a go pro too! :)

Either, or... I think the aftermarket ones are less expensive then oem, new.

I put my carrier on my axle the grease it using the fitting, then slide to whole carrier into the swing arm. The grease is just keeping water out of your carrier so your bearings don't rust and blow up... Like the ones you currently have.
