hindi font doesn't appear, how to troubleshoot installation of unicode font

I am trying to learn how to use Hindi on windows 7. I dragged the Mangal font into the font folder in the windows directory, but I still can't see how to use it. When I open the Mangal font, the letters are in English, rather than hindi.

Can anyone direct me to instructions to install this? (Most instructions seem to be for XP). Is there some simple step I'm missing? I'd like to be able to creat a word document that shows Hindi words and English translations.
