Obama Narrows Gap on Hillary Amid GOP Shakeup

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Illinois Senator Barack Obama is narrowing the gap on Hillary Clinton in the

Democratic race for the 2008 White House, amid turmoil in the Republican

camp, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

While former first lady Clinton is seen as the most experienced of all the

Democratic hopefuls, Obama is gaining support from voters keen to see a

breath of fresh air sweep through the White House, the CBS/New York Times

poll said.

Just three weeks before the first nominating contests in Iowa officially

kick off the race to the November 2008 presidential elections, the poll

showed that Clinton and Obama appeal to Democratic supporters for different

reasons.

Some 83 percent of Democratic primary voters saw Clinton as the best

prepared for the White House, compared to 41 percent for Obama, her nearest

rival.

And 63 percent also believe the former first lady has the best chance of

winning the 2008 vote, compared to just 14 percent for the Obama.

But Clinton's problem is that only 42 percent believe that the right

experience is the most important attribute for the nation's top job. Some 45

percent think that fresh ideas count the most.

Some 27 percent of Obama supporters say they back him because he is someone

new, while Clinton wins backing from 26 percent for her ties to her husband,

former president Bill Clinton, with 23 percent citing her experience.

Globally 44 percent of Democratic primary voters said they would support

Clinton as the Democratic candidate, while 27 percent said they would plump

for Obama and 11 percent for John Edwards.

But with 59 percent saying they had not yet made up their minds, the polls

could yet change and be influenced by the first votes to be cast early in

January.

The Republican camp has already undergone a sea change in the past two

months, according to the poll, carried out between December 5 and 9 among

some 1,028 voters.

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has come from nowhere in October,

when he was trailing with just four percent, and is now snapping at the

heels of front-runner Rudolph Giuliani with 21 percent support.

Giuliani, the former New York mayor who steered the city through the trauma

of the September 11, 2001 attacks, leads the pack with 22 percent of the

vote among Republican primary voters, down from 29 percent two months ago.

Support for the former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, has also

risen to 16 percent from 12 percent in October.

But with 76 percent of Republican voters still to make up their minds, the

camp is divided, and shows the race remains completely open.

Some 41 percent of voters are favorable towards Giuliani, compared with 37

percent favorable towards Senator John McCain, 36 percent for Romney and 30

percent for Huckabee.

The top three Republican candidates may have an uphill battle against any of

the three leading Democrats in head-to-head races, according to a CNN poll.

The poll gives Clinton, Obama and Edwards double-digit leads over Romney and

Huckabee. Giuliani trails each of the three Democrats by between six to nine

percentage points.

Ironically, while McCain trails in his party's race, he would give the top

Democrats the most trouble.

The CNN poll finds McCain leading Clinton 50 to 48 percent and tying with

Obama at 48 percent. But he trails Edwards, who gets 52 percent to McCain's

44 percent.

The CBS/Times poll has a margin of error of five points on the Democratic

side and six among Republicans, while the CNN survey has a three point

margin.
