15 Cuban migrants land on Fort Lauderdale beach

FORT LAUDERDALE

A homemade sheet-metal boat carrying 15 Cuban migrants washed ashore before

midnight Wednesday near the 1800 block of North Atlantic Boulevard,

authorities said.

The 10 men and five women were waiting along the seawall when U.S. Border

Patrol agents arrived at 11:56 p.m. All appeared to be in good physical

condition, including a woman 8 months pregnant.

"They just seemed weathered, tired, from exposure to the elements," said

Supervisory Board Patrol Agent Lazaro Guzman.

The group left Camaguey, Cuba, a month ago and landed in the Bahamas March

11, Guzman said.

They worked there illegally until they had enough money to buy the boat,

which was powered by a car motor, he said.

On Monday, they headed toward the United States.

The migrants are being held at the Border Patrol office in Pembroke Pines

until background checks are processed, Guzman said.

Border Patrol agents plan to take them to a medical center in Miami for

health screenings.

The Cubans are expected to be allowed to stay in the United States and be

granted residency under the federal "wet foot, dry foot" policy, which says

that Cubans who reach U.S. soil can stay while those who are picked up at

sea must be taken back to Cuba.

You miss the point.

1. They are no longer illegal

according to present law

2. How come The Coast Guard

branch of Homeland Security failed to detect them?

That's the issue.....the failure to detect an unauthorized boat on one of

our most vulnerable coasts.....

More Republican administration incompetence?

Illegal aliens! Kick 'em the hell out. And while you're at it, send

all the Cubans in S. Florida back to Cuba. Look at what terrible

damage they've done to our economy. And don't let 'em come back til

they learn English.

I like your thinking. Maybe you are a US patriot after all.

According to laws pushed

hard by Republicans these

people once landed in Florida

are not illegal aliens anymore.

MY issue is the failure to

detect them at sea. If they were

detected at sea they would be

sent back to Cuba.

Who is protecting our border?

Not the Republican administration, for sure!

Where was the Coast Guard?

A sheet metal boat undetected by radar?

Why does Republican "Homeland Security" fail us again?

Why is our coast unprotected?

Of course, it already happened on 9/11. All they have done is just

talk and beating their chests.
