how can I get my computer to recognize my new camera?

I just bought a new Canon 100 elph - I loaded the software but  my computer does not recognize the camera being hooked up to it - don't know why this is happening - in the past  I've  installed other cameras without this problem - I used the disk to download

the software and it says succesful - but when I open the program up it says not connecting - check conection to camera
