How much can one get for part outs?

So as most of you know my bike blew up this weekend. It is a bottom end failure, the head and cam etc are good. It was, apparently, a thrust bearing failure. I have not torn the motor down so I am not sure how the cases are yet (but a rough estimate of the typical case prices would help). The trans is good, and the bike is solid. The plastics are in decent shape, but they have been ridden. The seat is in excellent shape, and the frame, sub-frame and suspension are all in great shape, but the stock grab bar is bent (tail light is fine)

Aside from engine work the bike is stock. I do want to keep my HS stage 2, and my exhaust, but I will sell the HRC exhaust and cam that were on the bike, and the HRC carb when I bought it. I also want to keep the nerfs, as I do really like them. The rear tires are BRAND new GBC XC Masters and the fronts are fairly worn out stockers, the stock wheels are in good shape.

For those of you who have completely parted out a bike, what can one expect to get for it? I am weighing the rebuild or just dumping the bike in pieces and just buying another. I love the bike, and hate to part with it, but frankly I don't really want to blow a grand on the bike to repair it unless it is not feasible to recoup my investment. I really want to get out on another 450R quickly, but I can sit back for a couple months if I need to. As much as I work it will take me at least a month to tear it down and build it, so I am down for a while anyways.

In all honesty... If your plan is to part out to get another used bike I would just rebuild what you have. In the end your probably be close to even on cost out of pocket but you'll have a fresh motor if you keep what you have...

My best guess on parting out a stock bike... $1500-2000 depending on where you sell the parts and if you catch the market right. The money is in the aftermarket parts. Stock parts sell but take a while... The last basket case I parted out I netted $1726 but it cost me $254 in shipping (I kept a spread sheetmon that one).. There wasn't much in aftermarket and I'm sure I still have some parts from that one on the shelf.

OTMTRX is another one to ask... He was the one that turned me on to spreadsheeting part outs.

Heck man... Just buy a new crank for it.

Unless you are looking for something with suspension work already done.

believe me when I tell you this: unless you can catch the right people and have alot of time to wait to sell it all, you wont get what its really worth. No one really wants your stock axle-they want a durablue one, etc. I sold off all the aftermarket parts on my 400 for about 500 bucks-I had 300 in the rear shock alone tho.

What will sell is your frame, tires/wheels, nerfs and such. Everything thats stock is like giving it away. Ive bought many parts over the years and the stock ones are easy to find and usually cheap-specially if they are in good shape. I think Ed got about 300 bucks outta me (lol) over the years for various bits.

not saying ti cant be done,b ut it can sometimes take a long time and often you have to resort to giving junk away just to get rid of it. IE I have a set of maier rear plastics Im stuck with, shipping is too much and anyone who wants them so far is either lowballing me or shipping kills them.

Id rebuild it.

I agree with CJM. parting a stock quad out is a royal PITA! takes forever and you will be stuck with a lot of parts that wont sell and you wont make your money back. another vote to just rebuild it

Another vote to rebuild.

I had a 06 bike i've been parting out since winter. There was not many aftermarket parts on it and stock parts do sell slow. If you do decide to part out... i might be interested in your sub frame, tie rods, and maybe those tires too.

While you're at it with your rebuild, put in some goodies. When you do ride again..... you'll have a big smile on your face!

To answer your question on how much you'd get from a part out. Bailyguns already answered it :)

rebuild it.. if you need advise let me know... plus remember once you do that.. youll have a brand new 0 miles engine... totaly worth it..

I think I am rebuilding it. I am going to tear the motor out on sunday, get my shop ready for the teardown, and maybe get it torn down the following Sunday. We had a mechanic quit so we are short a guy and I have been pulling 6 day work weeks.

You made a good call. I would estimate 2000 out of parting your machine. dealing with all of the time that it takes, packing, shipping, etc is a real pain if you are not setup for it already. for around 1k you can do a full rebuild with some upgrades.

When you get it apart and find out what is needed shoot me an email with a list... i would be glad to put together a rebuild package for you.
