Guest Tim Bruening
The polar regions are warming up faster than the planet as a whole. The Arctic ice cap is down to its second lowest level ever. This means more heat absorbed by the planet instead of being reflected. Meanwhile, the permafrost in the Arctic region may soon melt and release methane, enhancing global warming. To stop the ice cap and permafrost death spiral, we must reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the Arctic. I therefore propose that NASA deploy large shades in orbit (equipped with rockets to keep them about the polar regions) about the polar regions to block out the sun, or scatter lots of dust above the Arctic. Another idea: Set up Ocean Thermal Energy Converters in the warm ocean regions near the equator. The OTECs would pump cold nutrient rich water from deep under the ocean. Algae could be grown in that water and used to remove CO2 from the air, thus reducing global warming.
