Hurricane Joaquin surges in strength near Bahamas: US forecasters

Hurricane Joaquin barreled toward the Bahamas Thursday as a powerful Category Three storm with sustained winds of 120 miles (195 kilometers) an hour, US weather forecasters said. The storm "will batter the central Bahamas with hurricane force winds" later Thursday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. It will then move up into the northwestern Bahamas, shifting to a course that could take it up the east coast of the United States, the NHC said.
