I cannot open security essentials to perform a task/scan

Please help.
I have a had Mse for about 3 weeks with no problems. Today I have noticed the icon is gone from my task bar and cannot be found. If I try to open from the start menu the box appears only for a fraction of a second then disappears,meaning I cannot get into it. I have already tried uninstalling and reinstalling mse but to no avail...
