I have had three XP Pro machines this week with exactly the same issue after a Windows update - "iertutil.dll" not found. I found the solution to the problem quickly on this forum but I now have a problem when windows updates the machine.
Here is a list of what I have done and the issue I now face.
1. Copied the iertutil.dll from C:\windows\system32\dllcache back into C:\windows\system32, which allowed me to log into the machine and see the desktop
2. Windows explorer would not come up. No error, just nothing.
3. I restored the machine back to a time before the IE 8 install and everything works fine - I think
4. When I started up IE, it gave me the "Welcome to IE 8" screen which is strange because it should not be on the machine
5. I then went into the "Microsoft Windows Update" website and installed all the updates which had been undone by my restore, including the IE 8 install.
6. The machine re-booted and IE was again not working.
Now I can do the restore back to last week again and get IE working but that just means that future updates will again kill IE and possibly something else.
Am I the only one having this problem? Please help.
