I'm At A Complete Loss On This One

Suddenly, just out the blue...my "print screen" button isn't taking

bitmap, uncompressed versions of the screen, rather it seems to be

using some form of JPEG compression. At first I thought it was just a

problem in Paint Shop, so I tried three other graphic editing proggies

and sho'nuf, same problem.

Ordinarily it wouldn't be that big a deal except I've been compiling,

sorting and archiving icon sets (from video games and computers). At

first I was storing them as individual ico files or gif/png files but

I've found it's easier to manage them by keeping them all arranged in

a grid in a layered image file, that way I can essentially see all the

icons all at once and can access any of them directly with much more

ease, plus it takes up a lot less space and there isn't as much file

and folder clutter.

So anywho, in order to port them over, rather than opening each file

up individually and copying them over I was just viewing as thumbnails

or as icons in the folder and then using print screen to copy over

whole sections at a time. Imagine my surprise when I suddenly used

the magic want to select all the white area and delete it out, using a

tolerance of zero only to suddenly see this:

sigh

And now I can't fix it and there doesn't seem to be any solution in

Google...probably not many people ever use print screen and those that

do aren't graphics savvy enough to even notice if the compression is

screwed up, so my last hope is asking around here if anyone is

familiar at all with the condition and how it can be remedied.

The only semi logical scenario I can imagine is that maybe there's

something wrong with my systems memory and/or cache file, so when the

print screen is used it's essentially copying the image in a bad

section of memory which is then causing the jpeg like

artifacting...but then if that is the case I certainly haven't seen

any indication of it with any other programs or processes. So I'm

wondering if maybe there's some kind of registry setting or something

that controls how it compresses the image.

I suppose as a last resort I can just copy all the icons over to

another system where it's still working right and then port them over

from there. I can't just do it manually though, that'd take WAY too

long as I still have around 12,000 more icons to sort through. o_O
