Standoff ends with death of troubled man
TAMPA -- An intense standoff came to a deadly end early Friday inside
a
Tampa gun range.
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said Jeffrey Dudney shot and
killed himself, more than 10 hours after taking several people
hostage
inside the Shooting Sports gun range on Dale Mabry Highway Thursday.
Just before 5pm deputies say Dudney walked into the gun range with
the
intention of stealing a gun and fleeing the area. However, someone
inside the store caught him in the act and that is when they say he
decided to take hostages.
Dudney had bonded out of jail last week after being arrested on 3
counts
of attempted 1st degree murder and DUI. In that incident, he was
accused
of firing a gun at several witnesses after he was involved in a DUI
crash.
Dudney told investigators during the standoff he felt he was going to
prison.
Over the course of the standoff, Dudney made repeated threats about
shooting the hostages. He came to the front door several times
holding
hostages at gunpoint.
Negotiators were able to get Dudney to release two of the hostages
safely, one after midnight, one around 130am, without incident, after
they were able to deliver medication he had requested.
At 3am officials say Dudney took his own life with a single gunshot
wound to the head. The 3 remaining hostages walked out of the
business
unharmed.
A portion of Dale Mabry from Waters Avenue to Hamilton Avenue that
had
been closed during the standoff, is now open.
