Japan defence chief says US A-bombs ended war

I would have dropped the bomb on Mt Fuji, just to demonstrate we had it.

That would only have blinded a few people.

The problem with my charming pacifist naivete is that we simply weren't

certain the damn thing would explode. It was only the 2nd or 3rd bomb we

ever constructed, and we only had one more. Hence, we had to make sure that

one would be enough, in terms of causing deaths. We couldn't, for example,

make a peaceful demonstration of one bomb, and then when Japan still refused

to surrender we try our last one on a city and discover _it's_ the dud.

The military problem was Japan insisted on fighting to the death. That

tactic, without any military value, ensured that our own troops remained in

serious personal danger long after any actual battle was lost. So, by this

narrow reckoning, we had to bring them death to make them stop.

Even then, the only thing that saved the Japanese from their warlords was

their Emporer saving his own skin by switching sides, then writing his

wartime role out of the history books. Never forget, folks!

nation's defense minister for saying the atomic bombings of Hiroshima

and Nagasaki were an inevitable way of ending World War II, and asked

him Monday to refrain from making similar remarks.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told Defense Minister Fumio Kyuma to

"strictly refrain from making remarks that cause misunderstanding,"

said chief Cabinet spokesman Yasuhisa Shiozaki.

"It is necessary for Cabinet ministers to pay constant and careful

attention to what they say and do so that they do not cause any public

misunderstanding," Shiozaki said.

Kyuma's comments offended survivors of the bombings who believe the

use of atomic weapons was excessive, but the minister is not expected

to resign.

"I understand he will carry out his responsibility as a Cabinet

minister in consideration of the prime minister's stern warning,"

Shiozaki said.

On Aug. 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped a bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on

Hiroshima, killing at least 140,000 people in the world's first atomic

bomb attack. Three days later it dropped another atomic bomb, "Fat

Man," on Nagasaki where about 74,000 are estimated to have been

killed.

Japan, which had attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor,

surrendered on Aug. 15, 1945.

"I understand that the bombing ended the war, and I think that it

couldn't be helped," Kyuma said in a speech at a university in Chiba,

just east of Tokyo. Part of the part speech Saturday was aired by

public broadcaster NHK.

Kyuma, who is from Nagasaki, said the bombing caused great suffering

in the city but said he did not resent the U.S. because the bombs

prevented the Soviet Union from entering the war with Japan, according

to Kyodo News agency.

The remarks were quickly criticized by atomic bomb victims.

Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue called the bombings the "indiscriminate

massacre of ordinary citizens" and the opposition Social Democratic

Party called for Kyuma's dismissal.

It was never necessary to drop it at all. The reason why it might not

work -- well, the bombs were prototypes, but the construction was

pretty robust. Once the conventional explosives were detonated the

rest was pretty simple. Few moving parts.

saving negotiation. We were fixated on "unconditional surrender." We

could have gotten all we wanted by just moving a few words around.

after they had had an opportunity to repel our invasion of southern

Kyushu.

The Japanese Army was also insisting that the terms of surrender

include:

a) No occupation of Japan

b) Japan be in charge of any war crimes trials

c) Japanese soldiers simply pack up and go home without surrendering

or being disarmed.

It was only on August 10 that Japan decided to try to surrender before

we invaded, and to try to surrender "just with a guarantee for the

Emperor". And by that time both A-bombs had been dropped.

The vast majority of people killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki were old

people, children and women, non-combatants. I find that to be

despicable. Should Japan have been defeated? Yes. Did we need to kill

hundreds of thousands of innocents to do it? No. In any event, your

They were all negotiating points. By the time we dropped the bomb they

knew the game was up. In any event, we could have dropped it in Tokyo

Harbor or Mt. Fuji. It would have had the same result.
