Personally I don't see/hear people calling others jew, or even jew related words.

It's probably because they dislike jewish people or something (But I'm not sure about that.)

It's just like insulting people with "that's gay"

It's a habit I think.. mostly they don't even mean it like they hate gays

in holland they often curse with "Kanker" (Cancer).

And also.. people start insulting your looks or other things when they can't think of any personality things..

Yea, when I was younger somehow I used 'Cancer' to call people names, I try not to use it anymore though, since my grand dad had it (he was succesfully operated, yay) - and it's working pretty well (I don't even dare say it in a convo where Franka is:eek: ). :)

I wish I could answer your question, but just like a few people in here, I've never heard that...

I do know however that for example in Continental Europe, hatred for Jews is known through history

so I guess it's prejudice/ignorance

or just something people say without realizing it

Yeah agreed

though I don't hear it often anymore.

like, 2 years ago it was popular.

Now the thing is "that's gay" and I didn't mind it before, but now EVERYONE'S saying it and even like you said, people who aren't against homosexuality.

*shrug* i think its just a phase.

The deal behind calling someone a jew dates back hundreds of years in Europe, where Catholics (IIRC) weren't allowed to lend money to people and put them into debt and make money off of it, ie interest (there are cases when they lent money to countries and bussinesses, which they saw as a loophole, since a bussiness and country isn't a person). So a lot of banks and such were run by jews, which they became rich because of it. So it was basically a jealousy that has stayed since then, even after catholics and protestants ran banks. So when they call someone a jew (or more specifically a jewish banker), they're calling them greedy and cheap. That's basically where the negative assocation with the term jew and the meaning of it came from.

Considering that Catholics don't really hate jews anymore, and the word is used among the youth of America, I feel as though this comment maybe a little bit false. But you put time in effort into your reponse so kudos to that. I was thinking about it and I feel that there seems to be a negative conotation with the word Jew for many reason. First off, the Hualocuast.(SP) They got the short end of the stick and alot of them died. So I mean after that who'd wanna be a jew? Second off they speak Hebrew. Possibly the least attracting language ever....

I think he meant the origin of that use of the word Jew.

I however don't and can't believe that it's just Catholics that started it.

I mean, in Europe, many religion and ethnic groups have hated Jews, for whatever reason

I'm not Catholic, but you can't just say, hey it was the bloody Catholics!

The associating Jews with money and greed surfaced with Shakespeare, but I think in general they've been hated a lot longer...

I'm speaking about hundreds of years ago where the racism and the negative meaning of "Jew" started . However, hatred from hundreds of years ago does carry over. The racism against jews isn't anything new (and by new, I mean the last 60-70 years). Then for the racism in the US, since many Americans are from European decent (from hundreds of years ago), they naturally carried their racism here. Also, WWII didn't do much to help Jewish people, however Hitler hated them because they didn't buy his artwork in Vienna and said that they (Jews) were the cause of German's defeat in WWI (which Jews did not cause their defeat).

Currently, Jews are still relatively wealthy people and thus people will be naturally jealous of them and be racist in an attempt to hurt them. Of course, I'm sure some of you guys know how it is. Someone has money and you don't, so you hate them, or vise versa.

As for Catholics and such, I never said that Catholics hate Jews today. I was merely speaking a couple hundred years ago.

Most of my statement was speaking of a couple hundred years ago (try thinking about 1600s or even before that, maybe even 1400s).

Of course it sounds hard to believe that people can hate a race for hundreds of years, but we're doing it to black people in the US. We're going on about 150 years of being racist towards black people (longer if you count us being racist towards black people when we had them enslaved). So yeah, racism can exsist for hundreds of years. The reasons and such may change slightly, but the racism still remains.

Also, it's amazing as to how people can hate someone for really no apparent reason, aside from their predecestors have hated them and have always hated them, so they follow suit.

Reflectionist, you can take your statement and shove it up your ass. Maybe if you had taken a European History class you would actually have some clue as to where some of the racism has evolved from. Untill you get a clue, please don't waste your time responding to me.

I don't remember the Jews being stereotyped by Catholics but some particular country. No, not Germany, before then. Jewish men predominantly owned the banking and investing businesses. Those jobs were the ones that basically gave loans and received payments accordingly. Apparently, they were pretty persistent to get their money at the time.

BTW, Matisyahu, the Jewish reggae artist is the shit; Listen to him.

Don't bag out the Jews. They rock! They showed Hitler!

But I guess they have always been portrayed as the rich ones, through literature and art and in The Merchant of Venice. I did an indepth study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and I think they have unfortantunately been targeted unfairly by history.
