Yeah, I had this problem for a while as well but I disabled all of my add-ons and IE started up on the first try. Problem solved.

I have been fighting this issue as well and I started with the IE add-on Spybot. I disabled both browser add-ons, rebooted, and launched IE the first time. Problem solved for me. Good luck and thanks to everyone.

Howdy,

I run IE V7 with XP.

If I launch IE, it hangs (every time.)

If I then launch another instance (while leaving the first

instance in its hung up state) the second instance always

launches properly.

This is a consistent pattern.

What might be causing it, and what can I do to correct the

hassle?

Many thanks,

toolbars, are damaged or conflict with Internet Explorer.

Run Internet Explorer 7 in 'No Add-Ons' mode:

If you have XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools >

Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)

Alternatively, you can create a shortcut on your desktop with the

following target path:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -extoff

If the problem does not occur in 'No Add-Ons' mode, then it's being

caused by one of the add-ons that you have installed. We can show you

how to identify which add-on is causing the problem.

Hi Leonard,

Many thanks for the speedy response...

Based on your diagnostic method, the problem is an Add-On.

Would I be correct to assume that I should just kill 'em one

at a time until I find the culprit? Or is there a better

approach?

All the best,

Unfortunately, you have to nuke 'em all and re-enable them one by one

until you find the bugger. I would start by re-enabling everything from

Microsoft first and all of those at once. Microsoft add-ons have been

known to cause trouble, but your problem is more likely to be caused by

a third-party add-on.

Use the Manage Add-ons tool to determine which add-on is causing the

problem:

1- Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs tab > 'Manage add-ons'

button > 'Manage Add-ons' window.

2- In the Show box, select 'Add-ons that have been used by Internet

Explorer' to display all add-ons that are installed on the computer. For

each item in this list, select the add-on, and then click Disable under

Settings. When you have disabled all the items in this list, click OK.

3- Start Internet Explorer 7. Go to Tools > point to Manage Add-ons >

click Enable or Disable Add-ons. Now enable a single add-on, then exit

and restart Internet Explorer 7 to see if it works properly. Repeat

until you determine which add-on causes the problem to occur.

Once you've located the troublemaking add-on(s) ask the vendor's

technical support for help.

Hi again,

Leonard had suggested to me that as a test, I launch IE

(from Accessories) with no add-ons running.

I did that, and it launched properly for the first time in

many days.

Then, to my surprise, I found that at this point I do not

have to test further because since that time I have launched

it successfully many times with no problem.

Of course the difficulty may start again, but with the help

you have both provided, I should be able to figure out what

is causing the problem.

Many thanks, as before,

The scrambled-egghead discussion you are replying to has not been active for four months.

Your problem is not "solved", you have merely completed the _first_ _step_ in

/identifying/ the problem. You now know that the problem is caused by an add-on.

The next steps involve selectively re-enabling add-ons to find the one(s) that cause

the problem to occur. Hint: toolbars are a common culprit.
