Lets say I was to build a drag quad............

Recommended Posts

Alot of you drag or dune race. Or you simply do it for pleasure. So, I would think it would be cool for Mattoon or any others to give some insite how to start. I would like to know how where and how to start with a TRX450R or a YFZ450 PLATFORM on a budget. I have a drag strip about 30 miles from me. So I was thinking............ why the fuck not? Lets here it! I want to know what I need first! And the basics. Naturally, the engine comes to mind, but what else?

Youbdont need everything all at once. Take your bike, put a +4 swinger and build from there. Run paddles that work for the dirt and you have a dragger

You'll have to get rid of the oversized gas tank and most people run steel pegs instead of front shocks so you might as well just send both of those items my way..

honestly, its all in the setup when it comes to drag racing. you can have a stout stock bore motor and be very competetive. chassis/tire/gearing is the biggest factor in drag racing. you need to figure out the terrain (dirt or sand) and the consistency of each. certain sand takes a shit ton of paddles to come out of the hole, some don't. in most cases, the taller the gearing (as long as your bike can pull it), the better. I ran 15/38 on my 58hp stock bore with my not-so-slender behind on it and got it to run a 4.9. smoked a 544 dasa and a few others with alot more power. stiff suspension is key, suspension movement absorbs energy that would otherwise be going to your tires. you want to run the SHORTEST swingarm and chassis you can while keeping the front end down. shorter wheelbase comes out of the hole harder. lightweight shit is key but I cant emphasize enough how important gearing, tire and chassis ridgidity is when it comes to flat drags. sorry if that isn't very organized, Im really tired tonight - Matt

Do it Tim... We can trade even more stuff then. Lol.

And obviously stick with a Honda.

Give me some credit Stewie. I will always have a Honda in the herd. lol Personally, I would build a 450r for the application. Im not a engine expert, but I would run my XC engine, but with a bored out FCR. I guess I would swap out a 2007 swing with a 04/05 swinger for the beginning. Put some stiff ass pogo stick shocks on it???? lol

Heres the thing, those Drag races pay cash, I hate to say it,but its all about the money with me. My chances of scoring cash is 0% for XC racing. The drags are different. They pay out! Plus, they let you drink beer at the event. I know........... Im a redneck, but its just more appealing to me.

get a banshee or quadzilla. if i was gonna build a drag bike, thats where i would start. i love my honda but for a straight line i would go 2 stroke.

everyone has a fast banshee part of the fun of 4 strokes is to see how fast you can get it to go

Ok.......... so this is what I have. Light port work to the current head. No bigger valves. CP 13:5:1 piston with CRF450 head gasket with just a standard grind Web cam. I really don't want to buy a new cam, new port work, etc just yet. But I know a carb is needed. I was lucky. I got the stock 40mm FCR with this. So do I need to get this carb punched out? If so, who???? Also, I do have access to a CRF450 head ready to go if need be.
