Logon failure when joining XP clients to a AD Domain

I have a W2003 AD domain to which I have successfully joined another member server, however, when trying to join XP Pro clients of various versions I get a message that the Logon has failed. I know the credentials are correct. I have found various references to this on the internet but none have fixed the problem.
