Pete & The Pirates

Little Death

Indie Pop/Indie Rock

For Fans Of: The Maccabees, Mystery Jets, Good Shoes

Reading isn't known overly too much for producing things, sure it has the Reading

Festival were people around my age buy and sell drugs as if it was second nature

were we there by proceed to take these drugs and go on the bumper cars and

whilst fairly grasping the concept of the stearing wheel we may bump into each

other repeatidly. We may even see the occasional band in between incessive

drug taking and bumping, this includes a hand full of local bands which get the

mis-fortune to play Carling Stage on a Sunday at a stupidly early time were the

crowd isn't much bigger then that of a small night club at 10pm and everythings

hungover and whiplashed from 3 days excessive drug taking and bumping. It was

then when I discoverd this local band 'Pete & The Pirates' and though I enjoyed

the set I didnt really think much more of them then I noticed that indie pop lovers

on sites such a drownedinsound were literally cock slapping at the mere notion

of a new single release or gig in their town and it was this that led me to check

them out further and too my suprise they had were much more then I rememberd

them to be!

Why Play One Set At Reading When You Can Play 2?

So after 3 or so really strong and hooky singles I went on and unlike me decided to

wait for the albums release and wait for the Royal Mail to provide me the goods rather

then the dodgey drug dealer like music blogs with there many other colourful pills

on display confusing me and diverting me from what I wanted in the first place. I am

glad I took this route as it allowed me to focus on this album all the more and give

more time to it and what this album is, is an album full of energy and just swooning

with catchy melodies and just like any good pirates, these pirates have hooks... excuse

me for the pun but it had to be done. From the moment you hear the opening track

with its harmonius chorus and interchangable melodies the is enough here to be very

approachable and instantanious without ever becoming a durge of simple power chords

ala every other indie pop band the NME seems to wank over these days. It pretty

much stays true to form from hgere on end with almost every song offering text book

jangely indie pop perfection wether it be the fun light hearted 'Come On Feet' or the

intoxicatingly brilliant 'Mr Understanding' which has every bit the potential to be the

bands break threw hit & despite its nature doesn't grate after a high play count which

for modern music of this kind is a very hard thing to come by.

http://www.weareinvolved.com/Pauls%20Website/Images/59.jpg

I see a nipple! And its pretty hard isn't it... pete, cold or excited? YOU DECIDE

So this is more then your run of a mill Jangely indie pop album, its got some of the

strongest hooks I have heard in a while as well as in instantanious and approachable

feel which will allow fans of more mainstream Jangely indie pop to jump straight in

but its not so repetetive and simple that it bores the other half of the demographic

it seems to find anything of this nature from this era (bar good shoes & maccabees)

a depressing fall to the british music industry. It does loose form a bit in the middle

but only margainly so, it's good fun... not a ground breaking or life changing record

by any means but a reminder to why Jangely indie pop became the british calling

card when it comes to music and how it got so popular in the first place. (8)

album: Black one

artist: Sunn o)))

genre: drone metal, dark ambient

Being the first album I listen to by Sunn aside from their collaboration with Boris, I can't judge whether they have become stale or redundant or what. But, I can tell that this rhymes with Matt's description of a Stephen O'Malley live show (Stephen being making up half of this duet), plucking one note in a selfish way. I'm not gonna call this selfish, but this is drone. It focuses one single themes, taking long times making dark brooding repetitive atmospheres.

On one hand this duet seems to have come far in shaping their atmospheres, but a lot of the time making this music is rather easy. Use either samples, keyboard pieces or single chords or notes on a distorted guitar, or all of the above, in a slow motion. Repeat for about ten minutes. We're not dealing with entirely the same material over and over again, but the setup and style of every song is exactly the same.

On the other hand, there is no variation, and all the songs are overly long, for that exact reason. These would perhaps work well with some kind of video work, but on their own they're just boring if you listen more than once or twice.

This band is a bit of an arty-farty love item, it's cool to have in your iTunes or whatever for the look of it, and the song length does look better for the arty-farty-ness if they are 10-15 mins than 3-4, but it's just too much.

Kudos on making really dark eery atmospheres, but this is just too long and boring.

BORIS

Smile

Drone/Drone Metal/Noise/Rock/Psycadelic/Doom Metal

For Fans Of: Sunn-O, Earth, Electric Wizard

It's terribly hard to find a band that dabbled in as many genres as this Japanese

trio, they are literally admired for their versatility and their mastering of almost

everything they seem to touch. They have got a quite a cult following too, people

who love this band really love them, though the is a catch 22 with this band, the

ONLY way you will enjoy them is if you have a soundsystem that is either very

powerful or spaced out, idealy you want both or a brillaint pair of headphones....

this is not a band for the casual listener.... your shitty proline speakers will just fuzz out the sound

rather patheticly and you little sony home stereo will not do this any justice what

so ever... believe me I have heard it in many ways and as I write this review I do so

with a surround sound set up, the stereo effects as a result are so spaced out that

both sides of my room amit different textures and nosies simultainously... it's compelling

and quite literally swings your brain back to forth, giving you mindfuck as if you have

just taken so far out trippy pills man!

http://www.smother.net/bom/images/boris-photo.jpg

Unlike many japanese artists these arent terrible pop acts being all twee

The amount of noise on this album will please noise fans, the heavy guitar riffs

found threw out the album in scaterd doses will please those fans of metal, the

soundscape will please those who love psycadelica and the general spaceyness

of it all combined with quite frankly breath taking production makes this not

only a great album to get lost in but also an ideal album for those people who

want to make their druggy parties all the more interesting (though I reccomend

this only for those with a stable state of mind) I mean the arent any weak

songs but the is one in particular 放て! This track is just so busy and so excilerating

its like having a massive dose of adrenalin shoved into your blood stream, puts

you into a spaced out yet alert state. But as I have said without the audio equiptment

the is just simply no reason to invest into this album, it will just sound clutterd and

messey... but for those with soundsystems dedicated to music... or a really killer

set of headphones you owe it to yourself to get this album. (9)

Weezer

Pinkerton

Pop Punk/Rock/Alternative

Released: September 24th 1996

For Fans Of: Everclear, The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day

Before the disgrace that wass 'Make Believe' Weezer had a very clean record

under their belt... they hadnt put out a bad album had one very strong one and

2 timeless classics! This album will fill under the classic bracket, the follow up

to the fantastic 'Blue Album' this album show cases Weezer, the once sunny

pop approachable friend now turn into the troubled angsty one who is noisey,

unstable but has a bitter-sweet edge to him so it make you want to hug, kiss

and love him regardless.... the hooks are still strong on this album but the riffs

are messier and more metalic, the pace in general in the album is much higher

and lyrically speaking this album is very heart broken and alot more melancolly

then their debut. The pop athstetic that made the band so popular in the first

place remains, the hooks here are fantastic, tracks such as 'Getchoo' & 'El

Scorcho' offer huge hooks for you to sing along to, 'Across The Sea' is one of

the most blatent shouts for the bitter sweet theme I mentioned earlier, very

heart felt song but it doesn't stray away from the pop punk athstetics.

To weezers relief the only balls on show are those implanted in blue tops chest

This album wasn't nearly as succesful as 'Blue' and is probably their least

succesful album to date but it is often in a neck n neck battle with 'Blue'

as to what album is indeed their best, I still edge more in favour to the

sunnier and poppier 'Blue' album but thats not to say this album doesn't have

its place... it's a different mood to 'Blue' its much darker and more mature

and provides more dimensions on the band, it's a classic... sometimes

considerd a forgotten classic but it contains some of Weezers best moments

and considering they were one of the best bands of the 90s this is not

to be taken lightly (9.5)

shame how weezer went down the toilet by each album...

green album was the last one with any ingredience at times

btw...is smile one of the boris albums where they're dabbling in everything, or does it focus on one style like doom or something?

They do dabble, but the is always the same dark undertone present. The is alot of noise present, quite a noisey album with moments of doom metal or drone metal thrown in, some psycadelic moments in the mix to.

Yea I know Weezers first 2 albums are just brilliant.

so far I haven't heard of any boris album without noise lol

they do love their noise, and dark tones, and screams, it seems.

yeah it's sad...like around here, they got minor attention with stuff like Hash pipe, but got really popular with that song that's two chords where Hef is in the video >.>

'Buddy Holly' is their most popular song & a damned fine one at that! Its played at rock/alternative nights all the time here.

Beverly Hills was so average at best

We Are Scientists

Brain Thurst Mastery

Indie Rock/Pop/Alternative

For Fans Of: The Rakes, Maximo Park, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys

Lets be honest here, what the hell have this band been doing the last couple of

years? Their profile has dropped drasticly since the release of smash hits such as

'The Great Escape' which has indie bopper kids of the like going 'Der Ler Der Ler

Der Ler De Ler DEN DEN' long into the night, they had great floor filler skills boy! This

band were one of the few of the type I always felt deserved their succes and were

along the lines of 'Maximo Park' and 'Arctic Monkeys' in terms of being worthy of

their mainstream attention just like I can see why Hitler got so much attention back

in the 40's.... sure what he may of been doing is generally considerd offensive but

he did it well so its all good... and the case is similar with 'We Are Scientists' arriving

at the time were the jangular hooky 'indie' rock was sky rocketing on the hype machine

with the NME licking ever anal region hole in sight if they were Geek-Shic or had 3 band

members which must include a guitar, drums and bass and at a push... a synth. But

whilst most of those bands were terrible, this band had a little place in my heart and

the problem is here is that with the release of this album their charm seems to have

been effectivley removed with a cliche crowbar.

MARRRR HARRRR

This is We Are Scientists trying to be more mature and quite frankly its the epic

american mainstream rock durge I have been trying to avoid most of my life. Sure the

are hooks and some interesting guitar bits and a couple ideas that extend away from

the Uh UH UH oh style vocals but for the most part the music is over produced and their

vocals sound unsualy Cliche and American... very American... they sound like psuedo

Emo band on ye olde vocals alot of the time and this doesnt settle to well with me. This

isn't the band I grew to love this is just pretty mediocre and forgetable work, okay the

are a couple of good songs 'Ghouls' is a pretty sweet opener and I hoped this

would reflect the bands work more 'After Hours' is just an okay single, its not going to

be nearly as memorable as anything off of their debut, the is just nothing to it

other a mildly catchy hook and melody. And thats what I can best describe this album

mildly catchy hooks and melodies... the really isnt anything more to this album and its

such a shame as I hoped this band would grow into something special but instead

their matority sounds forced and their sound sounds like it was decided by the suits

rather then the band... pretty big slab of average if you ask me. (5)
