KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. -- Three people were killed Sunday evening in a
chain-reaction wreck on Interstate 70 in Hancock County.

Police said the driver of a pickup truck from West Virginia was going
westbound and pulling an empty livestock trailer when he lost control about
eight miles east of Greenfield, crossed the median and broadsided a car,
which was then rear-ended by a tractor-trailer.

Intermittent snow was falling at the time of the wreck and at least parts of
the road had become slick as wind whipped the snow.

"With the winds as they are out here, the winds could have started whipping
the trailer," said Hancock County sheriff's Maj. Joseph Hunt. "We don't know
if it was road conditions or what. It slid across the median sideways into
the eastbound lanes of traffic. It was hit sideways by a small, compact
car."

The tractor-trailer crushed the small car.. Both people inside, teens from
Wayne County, were killed, as was the driver of the pickup truck. A female
passenger in the pickup truck was transported by medical helicopter to
Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Investigators said the occupants of the car were returning home after the
Indianapolis Colts home game.

Witnesses said that the car was so heavily damaged that it was
unrecognizable.

"It looked like part of the cargo I figured came off the truck," said Dan
Houser. "It was so badly smashed up, it was not recognizable as a passenger
vehicle -- so, pretty horrific."

Traffic on I-70 was backed up for miles and the road was closed for several
hours.

"It's sad because, look what time of the season it is," said Reed Russell,
who witnessed the wreck. "There's going to be a family without three
people."

Several other vehicles were involved in the crash and there were several
people who had minor injuries, Spencer reported.
