Microsoft Essentials turns itself off, and won't automatically be on when the computer is on.

Our desktop won't keep the Microsoft Essentials turned on, its off whenever we turn on the desktop, how do I change this? I'll turn on the computer and ME won't be on, it has to be manually turned on. Is this a setting that I don't know of? or did a virus get by? There is no other antivirus on this desktop.
