It's not for me. Not in XP anyway. I installed it two weeks ago the day it
was officially released. I uninstalled it tonight and went back to Avira
and WIndows Defender. MsMpEng.exe was eating up 25% of my quad core
processor on startup and sporadically later on. XP has always been fast on
this machine even though I have it heavily loaded. I want to keep it that
way. On the other hand, I have MSE installed in Windows 7 (on this same
machine) and it doesn't seem to gobble up resources like it does in XP.
I've Googled quite a bit about it. It's a known problem but there's enough
people working on it I have an idea they'll get it worked out some day.
I haven't tried it in Vista since Vista sucks so bad I never use it anyway.

Motherboard - Asus P5N-D
CPU - QuadCore Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2400 MHz (9 x 267)
Memory - 8 Gb (XP only sees 3.326 Gb)
Video - PNY GeForce 9800 GT (512)
Tri-boot XP Pro SP3 x86, Vista Home Premium x64 SP1, Windows 7 x64 RC

I have had MSE running on my desktop computer for about ten days. Seems
to be working fine and not slowing down my computer. Today I downloaded
the Vista version for my laptop; that also seems to be working well.
Other than disabling user account controls I haven't run into any
problems with Vista.

I removed AVG from both computers before installing MSE.

I too have uninstalled MSE and gone back to Avast!

The excessive CPU usage seems to kick in at random, sometimes at 50%/60%.

I have BT auto back up for Digital Vault and thought that this was the
cause, so I set MSE to ignore the Vault processes (client, server, tray) but
the problem remained.

Have no other "real time" anti-malware running. I have one or two programs
set to check for updates on start up but this would not explain the
continuous random peaks.

Could it be a WLM problem?

Am not prepared to follow the advice of stopping processes and then enabling
them one by one to find out what's causing the problem. This is an MS
problem, not mine and at the moment MSE is not fit for purpose on my
machine.

I know some posters report that it is working well but there are too many
others that report problems.

Will wait and see.
