MSE says that my computer is potentially unprotected because my virus and spyware definitions...

MSE says that my computer is potentially unprotected because my virus and spyware definitions havent been updated in at least seven days. When I click on the orange update button, it searches for updates says its installing them, but then goes back to the same message. Also the date that it says when it lasted checked for an update is one month ahead of the days date.
