"NTDLR is missing" error after SP3 update

After installing SP3 via Windows Live Update on a Lenovo R61i ThinkPad (Old computer, I know!) running Windows XP Pro, I got the "NTDLR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot" error message on startup.

The BIOS hard drive check found no issues with the hard drive, but when I try to boot the Windows XP recovery menu from CD, I get a blue screen reading, "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct (...)"

Any advice would be much appreciated!
