Office 2010 ask for key on file launch, but product launches fine

My Office 2010 individual programs work fine if I launch them. If I open a file on my computer, the correct application launches and works fine. My problem is that when I try to launch a document from internet explorer (clicking on a document, excel file, or other Office doc from an email) the Office - Activate / Purchase / User Office Starter pop-up screen appears.
How do I get rid of this? What is causing it?
Unfortunately, I don't have the product key to test going through the re-activiation process (purhcased Office Professional Plus through my Home/Office partnership through my company)
