Land deal could open Alaska wildlife refuge to oil

By Yereth Rosen

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) -

A controversial land swap proposal could open portions of an Alaska

wildlife refuge to oil drilling, dividing Alaska natives and stoking

opposition from environmentalists seeking to protect the bears, moose

and birds that live there.

Supporters of the plan to exchange land in the Yukon Flats National

Wildlife Refuge, which lies just south of the more-famous Arctic

National Wildlife Refuge, say they would like the plan to be approved

by the administration of President George W. Bush before the election

in November.

"The window is the election," Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young, a

staunch backer of the plan, said at an Anchorage news conference.

"We'd like to have an executive order out of the administration before

they leave office."

The "Bridge to Nowhere"

Don Young was listed as the third worst congressmen by the popular

magazine Rolling Stone, and dubbed "Mr. Pork" due to his involvement

in the Bridge to Nowhere incident

On July 24, 2007, the Wall Street Journal reported that Young was

under federal investigation for possibly taking bribes, illegal

gratuities or unreported gifts from VECO Corporation, an

Anchorage-based company.

The top two executives of that company have already pleaded guilty to

bribing members of the Alaska legislature.

The Journal said a Veco executive held fundraisers called "the Pig

Roast" for Young every August for ten years.

Between 1996 and 2006, Young received $157,000 from Veco employees and

its political action committee.

In the first half of 2007, Young spent more than $250,000 of campaign

contributions for legal fees.

Good.

Oh yea ... why do you say the refuge will be "destroyed"

just by sinking a few pipes in the ground ??? That's

ridiculous. It's not as if they're gonna smear that

precious goop all over the place. Every drop has value.

What, caribou ? They can't tell an oil well from a rock.

Personally I have no objection, provided the Oil companies are held

accountable, or possibly have to put up a 5 billion dollar bond for

potential cleanup.

Exxon still has not paid the judgment against it for the Valdese oil spill.
