A criminal complaint filed in federal court on Tuesday claims Isse, 72, has fled to the Republic of Djibouti where he "has been seen and interviewed by local reporters." Isse had a trial set for June 25 in Hennepin County for charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of attempted first-degree criminal sexual conduct. He did not appear for his court date and has since been listed as one of Minnesota's Top 10 Most Wanted. The federal affidavit says Isse "fled the Minneapolis area shortly after learning that uniformed Hennepin County deputy sheriffs were looking to arrest him the last week of June 2007." Isse is a popular poet, playwright, songwriter and actor and is well-known in the Somali literary community. He gained fame in the 1960s for his open criticism of corruption in the Somali government. Isse has lived in the Twin Cities for about 10 years. Isse is charged with the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in December 2006. Accroding to the criminal complaint, Isse crawled in bed with the girl and raped her while visiting her family. The victim talked by phone with Isse and recorded the conversation where Isse admitted to having sex with the her and that he wanted to see her again. Isse was questioned by police and claimed his comments were "only a joke," according to an affidavit. Eventually, he admitted to fondling the woman and engaging in other sex acts, the affidavit said.
