By Steve Keating UNIVERSITY PLACE, Washington (Reuters) - After six near-misses at the U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson felt he was right on target for a first victory after making a brief appearance at the top of the opening-round leaderboard on Thursday. A one-under 69 at Chambers Bay left the ever optimistic Mickelson four shots off the early pace and in an upbeat mood as he launched his bid for the elusive U.S. Open title that has been his career white whale. Few can appreciate the heartache that comes with six U.S. Open runner-up finishes but South Africa's Gary Player is one man who can feel the American's pain, having been a major bridesmaid himself seven times.
