Amp Energy Drink's iPhone App Gets Anger Flowing - WSJ.com

Energy drinks are meant to be edgy and cool, and drunk by young men. So PepsiCo Inc. decided to release an Apple iPhone application for its Amp Energy drink to appeal to guys out on the prowl.

Now the snack and beverage giant is facing a storm of criticism for "Amp Up Before You Score."

The app, released last Friday, purports to help men pick up any one of 24 types of women, such as the "sorority girl," "cougar," "rebound girl" or "punk rock girl." Users can choose the type of woman they have their eye on, then get coached on facts that might be useful, such as computing a carbon footprint to impress "the treehugger."

Suggested pick-up lines can be risqu?. To pick up "the artist," the app recommends the following line: "You know the Mona Lisa has no eyebrows. I wonder what else she shaves."

The app then takes the coaching a step further, encouraging users who "score" to post details such as name, date and comments, for their pals via Facebook and Twitter.

Hundreds of people have criticized the app via Twitter, saying it contributes to the objectification of women. Adfreak.com, a sister site of trade publication AdWeek, asks, "Does anyone not dislike Amp's iPhone app?"

PepsiCo apologized in a Twitter feed, saying, "Our app tried 2 show the humorous lengths guys go 2 pick up women. We apologize if it's in bad taste & appreciate your feedback."

When asked if PepsiCo might pull the app, a spokesman said the company is looking at the situation and evaluating its options.

The spokesman said the application is meant for iPhone users who are older than 17. "The application was designed to entertain and appeal to AMP's target," the spokesman said. "We'll continue to monitor the feedback from all parties and act accordingly."
So how about it?

Good idea, bad idea?

Good grief! It's a gaff! i think it's funny. I don't think it objectifies women. I don't think many women would for fall for those lines, but they'd laugh for sure. People need to lighten up a little. If this had been marketed to women...people would have thought it was funny.

The Mona Lisa one wouldn't have gotten me into bed either :p

If a guy is dumb enough to purchase the app....use the app thinking it might actually get him laid....AND drink that nasty Amp **** to boot then that's his problem.

And if a woman is dumb enough to fall for that ghey Mona Lisa line, that's her problem, too.

*** bless capitalism.

But EM, women don't need any lines to get laid, many times men do ;)

True....but this app won't help with that. As far as the drink is concerned...if they use these lines...they may just have to get "Amped" with a moist towel. :p

Well I don't see it as any worse than the line Ali was talking about one day that worked for her male friend.

Don't you think most the people in the "meat farm" called a bar know what time it is? I always tell guys who feel shy about breaking the ice that if they never ask, the answer is always no anyway so they may as well ask and have a chance at a yes.

If this app or anything else can get someone to gather up enough courage to break the ice.......then that is half the battle.

I guess that's true lol...if they used it as an ice breaker or to make someone laugh. If they tried to be serious...epic fail!

Well sure epic fail, most of the time I am sure ladies let us get away with it because they pity us poor men who want to get next to them ;)

My friend and her husband are trying to get pregnant and she told me she's keeping track of her best conception days with a "fertility" phone app.

Yeah. We've come to this.
