Woman Dies After Phoenix Airport Arrest

PHOENIX (AP) - A woman late to her plane became irate, was put in
handcuffs and was later found dead in a holding cell, police said.
Authorities were investigating Saturday if the woman choked herself
while trying to get free from the handcuffs.

Carol Ann Gotbaum, 45, of New York, was arrested Friday at Phoenix Sky
Harbor International Airport after a conflict with gate crews who
refused to allow her to board a plane, said Sgt. Andy Hill, a Phoenix
police spokesman.

The airline said the plane was already preparing to depart. She was
rebooked on the next flight, but "she became extremely irate,
apparently running up and down the gate area," US Airways spokesman
Derek Hanna said Saturday.

Officers handcuffed her and took her to the holding room, where she
kept screaming, authorities said. Hill said officers checked on her
when she stopped screaming and found her unresponsive.

Hill said it appears Gotbaum may have tried to get out of her
handcuffs, became tangled in the process and the cuffs ended up around
her neck. A cause of death will be determined by the Maricopa County
Medical Examiner.

"She was very agitated and irate and angry," Hill said. "These are the
things that led to the disorderly conduct arrest."

Authorities said neither a Taser nor pepper spray was used on the
woman.

I think we need to wait and see what results from the investigation on this
one. Maybe she was mentally ill, or maybe she was just a self-important
crybaby, like so many baby boomers and their worthless offspring. Who
knows, with the small amount of info that's been released?

They put her in the one place in Sky Harbor Airport not covered by a
security camera?

They took someone who was clearly a potential threat in an airport ,
and decided to take a break in supervision?

Whatever the case when somebody dies in custody there is a failure
somewhere.

POT, KETTLE, BLACK.... an obvious foolish child.

Yeah... I'm talking to you, jello brain.

Not mentally ill, but clearly a sense of entitlement in which she
thought the rules of mere mortals did not apply to her. She thought
she could pitch a tantrum and get her way. Not in Phoenix, apparently.

Travel Rule Number One: Always be nice to the flight desk clerk.

Travel Rule Number Two: Be calm and polite when dealing with travel
personnel. Flying into histrionics in an airport doesn't work in this
day and age.

Travel Rule Number Three: Be polite to security and police,
particularly when they can throw your hiney into a holding cell.

It is sad this lady paid the supreme penalty just for being a drama
queen. However, had a cooler head prevailed in which she realized that
her level of importance was no greater than anyone else in the airport
(significantly less important, really) she would have very likely
been released in an hour or so for her next flight home.
