Problem upgrading VISTA 64 bit from Home Premium to Ultimate on Toshiba laptop

Guest
Trying to upgrade my new Toshiba Satellite laptop from 64 bit VISTA Home
Premium to 64 bit VISTA Ultimate
Have plenty of space on C: drive - 150GB with approx 50GB used and 100 GB
free

While in Home Premium, I insert and run the VISTA Ultimate CD
Select upgrade
I have it connected to internet so it can retrieve updates

It goes though the process of upgrading but ends with a message similar
to --- Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then
reverts back to Home Premium.

I have tried performing the upgrade both before and after installing updates
to Home Premium- no difference.

I have tried having the network connected or not during upgrade-- no
difference.

I have researched newsgroup and MS Knowledgebase but cannot determine the
problem or what to try next.

Below is the contents of the file setuperr.log from the laptop after it
reverts back to Home Premium per KB articles 927523 and 927521.

I also tried performing a clean install of Ultimate on the laptop. It
installs completely without errors. Of course it then has none of the
Toshiba drivers that are necessary so this is not a viable answer but I
wanted to see if it would get through the install without errors.

Any thoughts and suggestions???
1. How to fix problem with upgrade?
or
2. How can I reasonably install all the drivers and Toshiba stuff if I do a
clean Ultimate install?

Why you want to upgrade to ultimate is beyond me.
If you were able to clean install Ultimate you can easily download and
install the Toshiba drivers afterward.
Hopefully you have backed up your data, image and music files and have the
install discs for your programs.

Are you sure that your Toshiba laptop that you are know is capable of
running either a 32 bit or 64 bit Vista Home premium is actually running the
64 bit version?
If it is not you will not be able to upgrade it to 64 bit ultimate unless
you do the install by booting from the 64 bit Vista installation DVD that
you have since a 32 bit to 64 bit in place or clean install upgrade can not
be run from a 32 bit OS.

Yes, I am sure that it came installed with 64-bit VISTA Home Premium. And
yes it is capable of running 64-bit Ultimate.

Why I want to upgrade to Ultimate may be beyond you, but it is not beyond
me.

Have you ever rebuilt a laptop? There are at least 30 drivers, patches, and
system items that I would have to download and install. This does not
include the normal Windows updates. Not a desirable task if I can avoid it.

It is a brand new laptop so there is no data, programs, etc. to worry about
but thank you for your concern.

If you really do need Ulimate for whatever reason and you have already done
a clean install; why don't you just go to the Toshiba website and download
the drivers and "Toshiba stuff" and install them???? You've already done 75%
of the work. 64 bit versions of Premium and Ultimate no doubt use the same
drivers. Download to a different computer, transfer the drivers to a flash
drive and load the drivers to the laptop from the flash drive. Not really
that big of a deal if you've already gone to the trouble of a clean install.
