Problem with AVG Free 8, Vista Home Premium SP1 and IE7

Installed Free AVG 8 here today on two systems - Vista Home Premium SP1 and

XP SP3 with IE7.

On the Vista machine, the installation of AVG 8 broke IE7 in opening a

second window - it just hung until the "not responding" message appeared.

I tried installing AVG without the surfsearch function, and without the

Linkscanner module - still couldn't open a second window in IE.

Uninstalling of AVG 8 cured the problem.

The installation on XP SP3 with IE7 had no effect at all. IE7 behaved

perfectly normally.

Anyone seen this, and is there a fix?

(The reason I went for AVG is that it picked up a virus on my XP machine

that Avast! did not.....)

Did you uninstall Avast before you installed AVG 8.0?

If so, did you run the Avast removal tool (aswclear.exe) before you

installed AVG 8.0?

http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

[sAVE aswclear.exe to your desktop & run manually, do not RUN it directly

from the download!]

Did you reinstall AVG 8.0 without the Safe Search and Link Scanner modules

without first uninstalling AVG 8.0 or did you uninstall AVG 8.0 first?

Strange symptoms indeed! I can't imagine what would cause them.

I can tell you that your last statement above would still be true

if you took an anti-virus from column 'a' and a different one from

column 'b' and substituted them for your choices. Sometimes it's

just a matter of what the vendor decides is worth alerting on and

sometimes it's just because they all miss something sometime.

Both of those anti-virus programs are 'adequate' IMO - so 'if

it ain't broke, don't fix it' applies.

I did uninstall Avast! through Control Panel-Programs and no I didn't run

the Avast! Removal tool. Didn't know there was one...however, I didn't run

that on the XP machine either, and IE7 functions perfectly normally on

that...

Additional info - uninstalled Avast using the cleaner tool. Installed AVG

without Safesearch and Link scanner modules. No change in behaviour - IE7

still hangs on opening a second window - Firefox does NOT however.

More info - if I use the File-New Window within IE7, everything works OK. If

I click on the IE7 icon either in the quick launch toolbar or on the start

menu, it doesn't.

Hi,

Try disabling other browser add-ons (not AVG) to see if there's a conflict

with another add-on.

Bingo! The Windows Live Toolbar Helper add-in seems to be the culprit.

Looks like there a lot more problems with AVG 8 free I and a lot of others

have printing problems, link problems and with the protected mode off you

cannot open another tab because of the popup that states something like

"pages in a different security zone must be opened in a new window"

When trying to print from IE7 the printer icon shows in the task bar but it

shows 0 documents pending and nothing prints. It appears the file is not

being spooled to the printer. I can print in all Office programs but not in

IE7. By turning off the Protected Mode in IE7 I am able to print but that is

not a suitable solution.

If you search the web for IE7 print problems you will find that there are

many and quite a few recently. The common thread I see is people questioning

the source of the problem and trying to determine the fault seem to point to

a similar set of circumstances. One of the requirements to install AVG 8

Free on a Vista system is first installing Microsoft’s KB929547 hotfix for

windows filtering platform. I have recently updated AVG 7.5 to 8.0 on 2

separate machines and experienced the same IE7 printing problem with both.

Two of my friends also did the same with the same results. I have 2 more

machines with similar requirements and I am going to test IE7 after the

KB929547 install and before installing AVG 8 to see if the printing problem

is caused by the MS KB929547 update or the AVG 8 Free install.

You will notice that AVG 8 has a Link Scanner and invades IE7 by scanning

all of your links in a Google search to determine if they are harmful. The

little wheel turns after each link and provides a green star with a checkmark

if the link is thought to be OK. How cute! Turning off the Link Scanner in

AVG did not solve the printing problem. I was a fan of AVG 7.5 because it was

straight forward and did not interfere with other processes as the big guys

do. So if you turn off the protected mode in IE7 so you can print and then

eliminate the irritating bonk that happens when you open each page will AVG

give you adequate protection?

By right clicking on your IE7 startup icon and selecting {Properties,

Shortcut} and then the advanced tab then check on the Run as Administrator

box you will be able to print from IE. If you are running as a user this box

will not allow you to check it. If that is the case use windows explorer to

go to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe. Right click on the

iexplore file and select Send to desktop as shortcut. You will then be able

to check the box on this icon to allow you to run as administrator. You will

need to put your admin password in each time you open IE7 but at least you

can print until the guilty party comes up with a solution.

With Protected Mode On I cannot reply in this forum, so that's one more hook

on the AVG 8 decision. The big guys Norton, McFee also mess with your

computer. AVG slows down your web experience because of the **** Link

Scanner. I ran for 3 years without any Virus protection and never had a

problem. I suspect I may go back to no virus program unless Avg Gisoft

fixes it. I wonder if the paid version of AVG has the same problem with IE7

I installed without toolbar and cannot print a web page in IE7. I also

installed without the web features and still no printing from IE7.

I just have the paid version now for anti-virus and anti-spy.span.

what can't you print?

the only thing that cannot print are ads because AVG blocks those in the Web

shield on the pro version and Link Scanner on the free version

If you uncheck both you should be able to print

I can confirm that I've experienced the same problem on an OEM Dell

install of Vista Home Premium + post install SP1 with IE7 and AVG 8.

I've even used the AVG install switches that don't install the link

scanner (hidden switches, need to be used at command line, listed on

AVG's site) and still cannot print from IE7. There's nothing added to

IE, no toolbars, no addins apart from the basic Microsoft ones

installed by the OS.

IE7 print preview appears fine, print driver settings are all

available, when you send to print queue icon appears in systray but

shows no docs to print. All other apps print fine.

Removing AVG 8 resolves the issue. Have had to revert to AVG 7.5 for

the meantime.

Interesting - I also have Home Premium SP1 with AVG free version 8,

default install. Printing works OK in IE7 here....

I cannot print anything that originates from IE7 - web page, banking, etc

etc

I can print anything else and I can print the pages if I use Firefox.

AVG's response is to switch off UAC.

Uninstall AVG 8 completely.

Then reinstall it, but this time without the AVG toolbar.

This should solve the problem.
