Monster truck crashes into crowd of spectators in DeKalb

8:21 PM CDT, August 9, 2007

DEKALB, Ill. - A monster truck performing stunts in front of an auto
parts store veered into a crowd of about 100 spectators Thursday,
injuring at least nine people before breaking through a wooden fence and
stopping on nearby railroad tracks, officials said.

Three adults and six children were taken to Kishwaukee Community
Hospital in DeKalb, officials said.

Two of them, a mother and her 4-year-old daughter, were in serious
condition and were transported to trauma hospitals in Rockford, said
Kishwaukee hospital spokeswoman Sharon Emanuelson. Six others were
treated and released and the remaining patient was in good condition
Thursday evening, she said.

The demonstration, part of a monster truck tour sponsored by NAPA Auto
Parts, featured the truck driving over four cars, crushing them.

"After its third or fourth attempt of rolling over the cars, and getting
back down to the street, it appeared to have lost control and at that
point careened off to the left into part of the crowd that was watching
the event," said City Manager Mark Biernacki.

Witness Patrick Sheridan, 16, said the driver and staff from NAPA had
asked observers to stand back from the road after the truck's first few
passes.

Yeah, it's the driver's fault and if anyone dies he should be charged
with manslaughter, but these spectators were idiots too. Hope the cops
gave the driver a booze test.

No reason; he asked them to stand back, and evidently they didn't
listen.

neanderthal days wandering the planet.

It wasn't his idea to do an exhibition on the street.

Some of the injured are kids. You can't use that excuse "i told them to
stand back" with kids.

How do you have rally races if you can't get people including kids to
"stand back"?

You have people there to make sure that the crowd stays back.

Of course, this same kind of accident happens every year in the Tour de
France. The damned crowds come within inches of 170-lb riders on 16-lb
bikes going 35 MPH and then whammo - some spectator gets laid flat, and
takes out a rider.

The only up side with the monster trucks is that those huge low-pressure
tires distribute the truck's weight over a very large area. If the tire
just clipped somebody's foot, it probably wouldn't crush it - but it would
be bruised to hell, no doubt. Those same type of tires are used by ag
equipment to keep from packing down tilled-up soil.

HAHAHA. Now that is the dumbest thing i ever heard. You think because
he was hired to do this stunt, then he's absolved of any
responsibility??? You are an idiot.

I know that means it wasn't manslaughter.

Really? It looks like that one got the message.

Which explains why he's a witness, and not a victim. I suspect a long,
happy, healthy, prosperous life for Mr. Sheridan.

I thought the consensus was that SADDAM was a charter member of
NAMBLA?

ROFLMAO- Had to look up just what NAMBLA was! Now that's funny Hector,
perhaps that is the root of all IT's concern.

Well then, you're an idiot. If i pay you to drive drunk and you kill
someone, you're still guilty of manslaughter, you legal ignoramus.

Strange thing is I didn't know what it was until I read it in one of
IT's posts. :)

You got proof the event sponsors paid the driver to run over audience
members?

Didn't think so.

There is no reason to think he was drunk.
