I can't decide. I'll put this in the court of Usenet opinion.

Voices of Usenet: Which is more creepy?

A clown, a mannequin, a clown posing as a mannequin, or a mannequin

dressed in a clown suit? Or other?

Fellow readers, I have something to report. I am currently watching the

edited-for-television version of "The Pulp Fiction" on AMC right now. In

the scene just before Uma Thurman's character ODs on heroin, John

Travolta's character is in the bathroom talking to himself, trying to

figure out how to get out of spending the evening with Thurman's

character. In this, the edited version, he says, "I'm gonna go

home...cool off..." Now, obviously anywon who has seen this movie in

its original form knows that "cool off" is actually a dubbed television

friendly version of what he really says. However, at the point when he

says "cool off," he still makes the "jerk off" hand gesture. I just

thought I should let you all know. Thanks, and I'll see you next time.

Love,

Wavy G

ABA urges next president to address attorney-client issues and more

Pamela A. MacLean /nlj.com

October 23, 2008

The American Bar Association issued a call to the next president, whoever

wins the election, to address pressing justice issues, including judicial

selection, immigration, attorney-client privilege and presidential signing

statements.

H. Thomas Wells Jr., ABA president, urged the president-elect and the Senate

to resolve delays and political wrangling that has marked the judicial

nomination and selection process in recent years by creating citizen

advisory panels.

Eight states with U.S. senators from opposing parties currently use

recommendations from citizen advisory committees to reach consensus on

proposing nominees to the president.

They tend to open the process, focus on nonpartisan qualifications and

shield the judiciary from political attacks, according to Wells.

This was one of six justice issues Wells presented as pressing justice

concerns in a open memo to the next president in the ABA's upcoming November

magazine.

Waivers of attorney-client privilege, which became a commonplace demand by

the Department of Justice over the past decade, was sought from corporations

and other groups by prosecutors as a sign of sincere cooperation during

investigations.

Through a series of memos spanning a decade, prosecutors were instructed to

deny cooperation credit to companies that refused to waive the privilege, as

well as work-product and employee legal protections during investigations.

Wells said the policies undermine "bedrock legal rights."
