Silver_dragon87
For some reason I feel like asking this. I'm sure it's not been done too many times before XD. So. Anyone read anything good recently? I'm not finished yet because I've been reading it in little bits at work (like any of you want to know that), but I do recommend a book called Touching the Void by Joe Simpsons. It's a mountain-climbing book this guy wrote when he and his friend went.....well...mountain-climbing, and the narrator breaks his leg. (It's a true story, BTW, if I'm not being clear on that.) He falls over a ledge on the descent and his friend is forced to make the decision to cut his rope and continue without him. He thinks Joe is dead, but he turns up a few days later--he survives the fall. I'm not doing it justice because I haven't finished reading it, like I said, but it's a VERY well-written, interesting, and compelling book. So, what have you all been reading? RoyalOrleans
I'm about halfway through the Two Towers, being the second part of the Lord of the Rings series. Silver_dragon87
Blagh LOTR. Loved the story, loved the characters, loved the movies, but I thought the books sucked. For one thing, I HATED how he split up the two quests or whatever you'd call them--half a book with one group and half with the other. What do you do if you think Frodo and Sam are annoying and whiney? That, and I got so sick of every him describing every forest and every tree in the forest and every LEAF on every TWIG and look, this tree has a song and a tale and the person in the song has a tale and the person in the tale has a song--enough already! I despised his writing style--I found it dry and painfully slow-moving. But maybe that's just me. Quote Everyone pound your feet to this phenomenon. Crazywumbat
Well one of my favorite books is this little charm: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/4770019483/qid=1125011440/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-9440079-4481718?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 Confessions of a Yakuza. Basically, it's the auto-biography of a Yakuza boss as told through his personal doctor. Really well told, fascinating life, the hardships and things this guy went through. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. Quote I promise to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. That I will never just accept what I am told. That I will never fall in love with safety and forget liberty. I promise that I will look for the lie in every pretty story and the bribe in every convenience. builder
Here's a new book I gotta get my hands on. "Your call is important to us: The Truth About Bullshit" by Laura Penny. Canadian journo and academic from Nova Scotia. It concerns the abuse of the English language. Example; Redifining words is a mark of the bullshit society, says Penny: "Even though the United States and Canada is founded on the liberal principles of the Enlightenment, like freedom and democracy, the word liberal has been hijacked and turned into a synonym for treasonous American hater". Example 2; Enron and Worldcom, were, in biz euphamese, "accounting irregularities". Example 3; "She sees the growing phenomen as a pandemic of manipulation, lies and deceit that threatens the fabric of society, a fabric that, in any event, was pretty much threadbare before the advent of highly paid spin-meisters and the acceptability of the core and non-core promise. Bullshit is rife, particularly where money and power are congregated." Hmmm, this Penny is the shit, for mine. Says it like it is. Love it. http://www.randomhouse.com/author/results.pperl?authorid=51994 Quote Persevere, it pisses people off.
Silver_dragon87
Nazz, just because I didn't like the book doesn't mean I'm a moron. I thought the story was wonderful and the characters well-developed and -defined, lovely journey, discovery, blah blah blah, whatever. Point is, the writing itself sucked. And that's, obviously, my own opinion. I found it stagnant and boring. Shrugs I'm picky about my styles. I prefer my books loaded with humour and modern-day allusions, where applicable. I would have loved to love the books; they're right up my alley. But his writing style ruined them--for me. Quote Everyone pound your feet to this phenomenon. RegisteredAndEducated
Wow, this is the geek part of me typing now... At least that's what you're all gonna think. Now these are in no particular order, I love to read so that would be impossible to do. I've read about 13 of the Dragon Lance Books, from Autumn Twilight, to Vanished Moon. Next in line would be the Harry Potter series. I've read all 6 that are currently out and I will be reading that 7th when it comes out. I have also read alot of Dean Koontz books. I read a book by Lorenzo Carcaterra, called Gangster that was pretty awesome earlier this year. I read pretty much any good book that I can get my hands on. I also like alot of the books by Ann Coulter, what a hottie, and she's got brains, a lethal match. And I'm nowhere near done with the book list, but I'm tired of thinking about it. Quote Intelligent people think... how ignorance must be bliss.... idiots have it so easy, it's not fair... to have to think... WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO BE AMONG THOSE FORTUNATE MASSES..... Hey, "Non-believers" I've just got one thing to say to ya... If you're right, then what difference does it make, it wont matter when we're dead anyway... But if I'm right... Well, hey... Ya better be right...
