Real-time protection turned off????

My MSE has started behaving irregularly for the last 2-3 days. Now it says real-time protection is turned off. I checked the setting and found it is on. When I click "turn on" on the home page, it says it cannot be turned on because the timeout period has expired. What does that mean? I think something serious is going on in my PC now. Help me community members.
