A question for those among us who know a thing or two about Live Recording.

I'm trying to put together a good set up for recording concerts, but I'm on a budget.

Currently I have a Sharp MD-MS701H, and now I'm looking at Mic and Preamp set ups.

Ive found two that will fit my budget, but I need to know which will be better for recording loud concerts.

Option 1:

I can buy a Mic with a built in preamp, with the following specs:

  • Hi-Q Omnidirectional PANASONIC microphone CAPSULE
  • 12- 28,000 Hz frequency response
  • Sensitivity rated at -35 decibels +4 decibels
  • Low sound to noise ratio > 62 dB
  • High quality silver plated 3.5mm stereo plug
  • Joined Stereo

Option 2:

I can buy a Sony ECM-DS70P Mic seperately and get the same preamp. The mic has the following specs:

  • Frequency Response 100-15,000Hz
  • Sensitivity -38dBV, +/- 3.5dB
  • Noise Level 34dB SPL
  • Maximum Input Level 110dB SPL (THD 1% @ 1kHz)
  • Cord length 3.3 feet (1m)
  • Plug L-shaped gold-plated mini plug, 3.5mm

Which would be the better set up?

EDIT: Also, will running a Microphone/Preamp into a Line In, rather then a Mic In, affect the quality of the recording?

It depends the sound you want. With the dynamic you will get a bunch of bleed (you will hear the drums in channels of everything but on the bright side you will get a more overall sounds such as more reverb making it seem more real) Dynamic are usually less expense.

Condenser mics are more expensive but are usually used for live recording.

Personally though you need more than one mic. You are gonna want 8 for drums, 1 for each guitar 1 for bass, and 1 for voclisit.

Running into a Preamp doesn't effect quality of sound (unless you take it to loud and the audio clips) it just builds up a strong connection (make it louder)

EDIT: BTW how many channels you working with on mix board and what exactly are you a recording (full band, just you?)

ALSO EDIT: I would also like to point out I usually do studio recording not live. So I may be wrong on mic placement for live recording.

Well, from what I can gather, those mics wont do me any good.

And I wont require a preamp, as my MD recorder has a Mic In which powers the mics for me.

I have found a set of Mics that are great for the job, but they are $100, so Ill see what happens.

If I feel recording the LP show is truely worth it, ill get them.
