Redskins ask US high court to weigh contentious trademark

The Washington Redskins have asked the US Supreme Court to determine whether the American football team can trademark its name, denounced by activists as a racial slur against Native Americans. Although the Redskins could still use the name after losing the trademark, if they lose their case, they could also lose millions of dollars in royalty fees for the sale of merchandise bearing the name or logo. The NFL must "stop promoting a racial slur as the Washington team's name," said Oneida Indian Nation Representative Ray Halbritter, who leads the Change the Mascot campaign.
