skategreen
That day was the most surreal day....I'd had in a long time. I'd just moved to NY a couple weeks before. The scope of the changes that one day has wrought is mind boggling - so many events following as direct result - so many more lives lost, so many changes to individual lives. I've been working with a program that is directly helping the after effects of this day on the 9-11 rescue workers. It's rewarding in an incomparable way. (ranks right up there with my past job as a teacher) .... so today, it's all very close to me. (but I still gotta go grocery shopping!) Thanks for the thread Tizz. 1 Quote The thought manifests as the word. The word manifests as the deed. The deed develops into habit. And the habit hardens into character. skategreen
I wanted this post to be separate from the other. On a more uplifting note, (for, we look for these where we can) A most wonderful book chronicles the tale of what happened with many of the planes and passengers in those planes, who were ordered out of the skies on 9-11. I was chatting with a new found friend on a train ride into the city one morn, and he recommended it to me. Here is a review taken from Amazon that gives some of the joy of that book: It's hard to believe that anything written about the events of September 11, 2001, could be described as 'wonderful' but Miami Herald columnist Jim DeFede has penned a book that is all that and more. 'The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland' describes what happened when more than 250 aircraft, prohibited from entering U.S. airspace due to the terrorist attacks, were diverted to Canadian airports. Of those, 38 planes bearing 6,595 passengers landed in Gander, Newfoundland, a town with a population of barely 10,000. What happened next goes a very long way to restore the faith in humanity that was shaken by the terrorists. Without exception, the residents of Gander (They call themselves 'Newfies') opened their doors to welcome the unexpected refugees and poured out such warmth and compassion that one passenger later remarked, "I was on a flight from London to New York and landed in Heaven." Schools were closed to provide space for shelters. Residents took the sheets and blankets off their own beds to deliver to the passengers and stayed up all night to feed and welcome then when they finally were able to get off the planes. Locals approached 'plane people' in the street and invited them into their homes to shower. Pharmacists made thousands of calls worldwide to verify prescriptions and then filled them for free. Shop owners gave away their stock to those in need and, when they ran out, bought more from the competition and gave that away as well. The events described in this book will make you either proud to be a Canadian or regretful that you aren't. DeFede skillfully blends the tragic and the comic. One moment Gander's residents are compassionately providing around-the-clock care and companionship to the mother of a missing New York firefighter. Meanwhile, other locals are making honorary Newfoundlanders out of several passengers by means of an age-old ceremony involving kissing a codfish and drinking the local liquor whose name, Screech, is apparently an apt description of its flavor. There's even a little karma thrown in. When the principal of the Lewisporte Middle School allows a passenger to use their computer center to 'run a small business' she doesn't discover until later that the passenger's name was Gordon Conway and the 'small business' that he was running out of her school was the Rockefeller Foundation. Needless to say, her generosity resulted in a new computer center for her students. After the end of their involuntary visit to Gander, many of the passengers have since returned to Gander to visit and express their appreciation to those who were so kind and generous to them. I, too, plan to visit Gander someday, if for no other reason than to see what kind of people it takes to shine such a bright light on one of the darkest days in our history. I'd also like to find out what Screech tastes like. and another: The events of September 11 have seemingly been covered, analyzed, and discussed from every angle imaginable. So the subject matter alone of Jim DeFede's The Day the World Came to Town makes it noteworthy. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 38 commercial airliners carrying over 6,000 passengers were forced, as a precautionary measure, to land in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada. Due to the ongoing closure of U.S. airspace, the passengers spent four days in this isolated town of 10,000 before being allowed to continue on their way. In that time, Gander's residents rallied together to extend a kind of hospitality that seems too expansive for the word hospitality. Townspeople not only opened schools and legion halls for use as emergency shelters, they invited the passengers into their homes for showers, meals, and warm beds while local businesses simply gave toiletries and clothing to passengers stuck without luggage. Despite the grim consequences that led to the situation, DeFede finds humor: two flight attendants are offered a car for sightseeing by a local woman who happened to be driving by; the stranded chairman of Hugo Boss finds himself shopping for men's underwear at the local Wal-Mart. But the real message of the book is how, even in times of great turmoil and conflict, people can and must look to one another for comfort, help, and hope. --John Moe They described it well enough to save me the job of telling about it. It's a wonderful read! Quote The thought manifests as the word. The word manifests as the deed. The deed develops into habit. And the habit hardens into character. ALLAH IS GREAT
Islam at it's finest! Oh be quiet you drooling hedgehog!!! I doubt you've even thought of the victims, your bitterness surpasses everything.Your aim is just to try to make everyone else's heart wither and blacken like your own.Give it a rest will ya?It's people like you that prevent peace from forming.May I ask what you really want?I think we all get the picture of your hate for Islam. So what do you want done?Do you want all muslims to be slaughtered?Cos in truth that's the only way you'll get rid of Islam. And that will never happen. This reminds me of a verse in the NOBLE QURAN that reminds me of you. ''They intend to put out the Light of Allah(Islam,Quran, the Prophet(pbuh) with their mouths. But Allah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate(it)'' 61:8 You see MRIH,your words don't mean or change anything. It just makes you such a fool for hating so much and forgetting your own religion.Yeah, you act all high and mighty by defending it,yet you repel it with your actions and the contents of that sorry excuse of a heart. Now coming back to something you said to me a while ago.You know, that i'm apparently not a good muslim if I don't go on a killing spree. Well,I've found 2 interesting verses from your bible that show that maybe you or even all christians alive are not true christians. Here we go: Matthew 21:21 " Jesus replied, 'I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.'" I challenge any "faithful" believing Christian(well the one's on this site at the moment) to move one brick, not a mountain with his sight or words. Have any Christian from the time of Jesus till now been able to do it,MRIH? Mark 16:17-18 "And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well." Again, I challenge any Christian to allow himself to get bit by a poisonous rattle snake or cobra and survive its venom. Now since no christian can do this, then it means you have absolutely no true faith. The Bible contains many verses in it that contain irrational statements. The above two being clear examples. Quote 'They intend to put out the Light of Allah with their mouths. But Allah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate it' ''Oh Allah!Make the best of my deeds my last deeds, and make the best of my life my last moments, and make the best day of my life the Day I meet You!'' GrayGal
Ol Glory's Day (Sept 11, 2001) Why so many, why so fast Why does this hatred have to last? The lives taken, were in vein This terrorist act has left so much pain We live for justice and hope for peace Pray to God about the deceased The Evil lingers now every day The U.S. will eventually make them pay Every person, of every race or creed must unite We might not want it, But we have to make it right America can stand strong And we know we're not wrong Go out and fight And take ol' glory with all her might Let her wave her colors so true Those wonderful colors of Red, White, and Blue I wrote this on 9/12/01.....I summited it to poetry.com I got 150 dollars for it....i sent back the money. I know i might sound cheesy but that day will be burnt into my memory forever. To all those who lives were taken so soon...let us pray. wolvesslasher
Well atleast the "victims" famillies won the government lottery. I hope they are enjoying their expensive cars,houses,etc.. I never would have thought that these people would put prices on thier "loved" ones. Nobody is innocent including the people who died on Sept.11. I doubt they never went over the speed limit, lied, stole something,etc.. I never knew the people that died so why in the hell should I care if they are dead. And how can you guys remember people you have never even met? ONLY SHOW RESPECT TO PEOPLE WHEN THEY ARE DEAD. This seems to be a motto that allot of people live by. How many people cared about the Sept.11 "victims" when they were alive? Only the people that knew them? Now that they are dead I'm supposed to care about them and show respect for them? Hell no!!! tizz
I know one woman who lost her husband in the north tower. She got money and aside from securing a home in a new state and setting up security for her three children, she uses the money to help fund small non-profits and to help people out. She says she got this money and she wants to do good with it because that is what her husband would have done. He was a NYC firefighter. ToriAllen
I had just gotten to school when someone went over to the TV that was in our classroom and turned it on. The first plane had hit and most Americans were still thinking/hoping that it was due to pilot error. We sat and watched the coverage, trying to gain some incite into what had happened. Then, the second plane hit the building as we watched. I still remember the shock and horror in the reporter Quote Smart men learn from their own mistakes; Wise men learn from others. tizz
My sister came in a woke me up (my daughter was 8 weeks to the day) and when I got to the TV the second plane was hiting. I thought it was a replay then I relised. I thought right away of Osama. I ran into the bedroom, picked up my daughter and didn't put her down for a week. I tried everything to leave the area. I remember a HUGE breath of reliefe when my neighbor's husbands screeched into the dirveway (He worked in a building just near the trade center) He had been running late that morning (thank god). I still shutter when I hear a plane fly over head and I panic when there is more than five minuted of dead sky (There is NEVER dead sky here. To this day, when I'm drivin the 5 boroughs, but especially when I'm braving NYC traffic...when I see a plane in the air, my first thought is, "weapon". It used to be...I'd look up at a plane going by and immediately think of the people inside. Flitting, even if just in the backroads of my mind, I'd wonder "where are you going?" ...and I'd wish them well, I'd imagine that they were all going on vacation and were off to have a good time - sometimes, on days of cabin fever, I might glance up with a hint of jealousy. Me, stuck in traffic and you're up there on your way to colorful drinks in big glasses with umbrellas! ..but always wished them well anyway. Now...it's different. It's "weapon", followed by "just keep goin, buddy, get to where you're goin - No Fuckin Detours". I've talked to hundreds of survivors of 9-11, many firefighters and rescue/recovery workers who lost friends, co-workers, and family - the horror of their stories is real - stark - and stunning...and I am always leveled. You sit hushed, as if in church, - paying homage..and falling into the dark abyss of their words. It must be ... similar to that which soldiers carry with them. Compassion is a must.
