By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House Republicans on Wednesday defended an industry-backed legislative proposal that would award automakers credits against federal pollution standards for adopting advanced collision-avoidance technology in cars and other light vehicles. The measure drew fire at a committee hearing from Democrats and regulators, who criticized the approach as an unacceptable trade-off between auto safety and public health that added to other concerns about the draft bill. Republicans described the credits as an incentive for innovations such as collision-avoidance vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology that experts say could eliminate a majority of traffic accidents involving unimpaired drivers.
