Rotellla oil causing metal shavings or premature motor wear!?!?

Recommended Posts

After reading some posts about 2 seperate machines having metal shavings after running Rotella, i wanted to see if others are noticing the same thing.

I've been running this stuff in lots of machines over the past few years and have never seen a problem, but i have heard just about every reason not to run it.

My local buddies say not to run it because it's not designed for high revving motors, or wet clutches, etc.....this is all talk since these guys don't have any first hand experience, they are just assuming since it's labeled as a diesel oil and it's cheap, that it's crap.

I personally love this oil and have not seen metal shavings due to running it. Does anybody else have EXPERIENCE with this oil and if so what are you results?

If you have never ran rotella, please don't comment, but if you've been running it for awhile or if you recently quit running it, i'd love to hear the results!

So far it's caused my rod to snap, blowing out cases, broken cylinder, bent intake valves, wobbly crank, kinked starter and a bent fuel screw but never has it had shavings in the filter.

I'm sure it's the oil and has nothing to do with the power output of your 450 ;)

I run it in both my 450's with no bad results.

It also causes alot of orguments.

On topic - I've never used the stuff in my quad. But I can still give my opinion right? I'd never use it.

RR honestly this debate could go on and on, go over to any car site and I promise you oil vs oil is being discussed. I think it was mentioned in the other thread that use what works for you. If you use it and find no shavings then keep on keepin on. And I don't recall anyone saying the the Rotella itself caused the shavings, but I am what's known as a skimmer

this is not an oil vs oil thread and i did not start it to debate. I'm asking if anybody that has real world experience with rotella has ever had an issue that was due to running this oil. I run this oil and i'm looking for information from other guys that also run it. Rotella works for me but if it messes up somebody elses motor or 2 motors i'll certainly stop using it asap! I don't know what was said, i'm not sure if anybody said "Rotella itself caused the shavings", i believe the poster said that they do not run it because they found shavings in 2 motors after using it, then they switched to a different oil and did not have shavings, so......you can make the call on that one.

again, just to be clear i'm looking for real world opinions on this oil, if nobody else has had problems then we can most definitely rule out the Rotella as causing the shavings, that's my concern if it's harmful i don't want to run it, if lots of other guys don't have issues with it, i will keep running it. i personally have not seen shavings, but maybe i'm getting lucky, maybe there's something i can avoid if this stuff truly is crappy.

yeah that's normal, just clutch fibers, i see that with all the oil even the honda red will show it. i'm more concerned about people finding metal shavings similar to what was mentioned like the basket getting tore up, or tranny getting messed up, or even on the motor side if people are seeing shavings with rotella on the motor side, i'm interested to know about it.

For what it's worth since we're on the topic I had gray tranny oil when it came to dump the honda gn4 out. Now that I run motul it goes in green and comes out the same green. So real world testing, motul shears less.

personally, the oil from the factory is the best stuff. Just leave it in. :gr_wink:

sounds like it's causing some issues for people on the tranny side. I think i'll switch over to red bottle to possibly avoid some of these issues in the future.

I ran the factory clutch in mine up until January. Sure the oil was gray but the fibers still looked new and are still within spec. That's been years of hammer down dunes, lots of trails and everything in between. Now its a back up clutch in my bag. Trans gears have always looked perfect upon every teardown I've have. I actually made a switch from the red bottle after seeing excessive wear on the gear teeth. Two years+ at 80hp+ and still great. I see no issues directly caused by running rotella in the transmission side.

Is the chatbox not working?

in the future send this to an admin, don't come into my thread and post some stupid question like that. You've posted several times in this thread without the basic criteria that i asked for. "EXPERIENCE with Rotella". You would never run it, that's fine, we don't care.....again i'm wanting real world experience, don't need you beefing up your post count at my expense, lol.

with love,

Whoa whoa whoa. I'll admit I put an opinion where an opinion doesn't need to be. Misunderstood the thread/thought I was in another post.

If anything I was trying to keep your thread clean and on point with the chatbox comment..

forgive me, i misunderstood your comment. i can see now that you were asking if the chatbox was working because of the few comments previous that were trolling comments, you were basically saying, take that stuff to the chat box. I get it now, sorry for snapping.
