Now people are complaining about this guy and I agree he probably isn't the best candidate for a federal position on drug free schools...

Critics Assail Obama's 'Safe Schools' Czar, Say He's Wrong Man for the Job

Critics say Kevin Jennings is too radical for the job of director of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, citing what they say is his promotion of homosexuality in schools, his writings about his past drug abuse and his onetime contempt for religion.

Jennings' detractors note that he made four references to his personal drug abuse in his 2007 autobiography, "Mama's Boy, Preacher's Son: A Memoir." On page 103, discussing his high school years in Hawaii in the early 1980s, Jennings wrote:

"I got stoned more often and went out to the beach at Bellows, overlooking Honolulu Harbor and the lights of the city, to drink with my buddies on Friday and Saturday nights, spending hours watching the planes take off and land at the airport, which is actually quite fascinating when you are drunk and stoned."

Sprigg said that quote is particularly unacceptable for someone who has been named to lead America's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools.

I do have to admit, however, he's right about being stoned and drunk and watching planes take off and land, ala...

Yeah, I think his colorful past and "progressive" approach may not be a good match for this position.

An aquaintance of mine is the drug and alcohol counselor here at the school in town. I used to be on a dart league with her and the woman drank like a fish and got so bombed that we'd have to pull over several times on the way home so she could puke....and then we'd have to walk her down the stairs to her apartment to make sure she didn't fall and break her neck. This happened every time we went out!

Sadly, I think she may have a serious problem with alcohol because she has been going to the bar after work a lot and she's never able to drink without becoming completely wasted. I guess she's missing work a lot, too, from being hungover.

She may not be the best person to be teaching kids about the dangers of alcohol. :(

But some would argue that a recovering abuser would be the BEST person to counsel others about drug and alcohol problems because they've been there and understand what it's like to deal with those demons. And perhaps that's true!

I'll definitely be curious to see what other members think about this. :)
