TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, S.C. -- Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said
Friday that searchers found a body in the area that has been searched for a
couple missing in the mountains of North Carolina, but the identity of the
person has not yet been confirmed.

The body was recovered within about a mile of where an SUV belonging to John
Bryant, 79, and Irene Bryant, 84, was found. The couple has been missing for
more than two weeks.
Mahoney said that they are photographing the scene and documenting evidence
before the body will be removed and transported to Chapel Hill, N.C., for an
autopsy and identification.
He said that the body was found at about 10 a.m. in an area that had been
previously searched. He said Friday morning, searchers returned to the area
and were performing a shoulder-to-shoulder grid search when the body was
found.
Because of the circumstances, the investigation is being treated as a
homicide, but only as normal protocol. Mahoney said that there is no
evidence of foul play. He did said that the remains were not buried.
He said the search will continue throughout the weekend, and several
agencies are involved.
Mahoney said, "We have certainly stepped up the search within that vicinity
after locating the one (body). We're just not going to take anything for
granted. Any type of investigation that revolves around a death -- obviously
you want to make sure you take care of all the issues we need to take care
of investigating -- any and all leads that you develop."
Avid Hikers Disappear
The Bryants, who were married more than 50 years, were avid hikers. They
were reported missing after their mail piled up at their Henderson County
home, and their son flew in from Texas and couldn't find them or their car.
After their phone records were tracked, it was learned that Irene Bryant
tried to use her cell phone on Oct. 21 to call 911, but because of a lost
signal, the call never reached the emergency call center.
The Bryants' SUV was found last Tuesday on Yellow Gap Road, off U.S. 276.
The search centered around a 1- or 2-square-mile area in the Pisgah National
Forest near the Pink Beds Loop Trail in the Cradle of Forestry.
Searchers from several organizations and several states are hunting through
the dense woods looking for the Bryants. The search got a huge boost Friday
morning, when a large number of trained searchers joined the effort. A
training exercise for rescuer workers from four states was scheduled to be
held in Dupont National Forest on Friday, but instead the workers joined the
real-life search for John and Irene Bryant.
Searchers are using all-terrain vehicles, search-and-rescue dogs and
helicopters, besides searching on foot. Late in the week, cadaver dogs were
also being used to search as temperatures dropped and hope of finding the
couple alive grew dim.
During the week, WYFF News 4 learned that John Bryant took heart medication.
Family had said that he probably wouldn't last long without it.
Ethan Smith with the Brevard Rescue Squad said, "Probably the most likely
scenario at this point is that they went hiking, either got lost or had a
medical problem and were unable to get out." (AND OF COURSE, THE USELESS
