Security Essentials MspEng

I added Microsoft Security Essentials after a fresh install of WinXP Pro. It ran fine for a couple of months but all of a sudden there were surges in my cpu usage. MspEng.exe is the culprit. I can barely do any work now as it has gotten worse and uses all or most of my cpu all of the time now. HELP! What is it, where is it what does it do and how do I get it to act right or make it go away?
