Shady car dealers

Well remember that car I received a few weeks back? Here's the story. I've been having some problems with it so I haven't been driving it much till I could take it to an auto repair. So I'm driving down the road to get some groceries which I desperately needed and the **** car just dies at a busy intersection. Luckily a cop comes and offers to push it out of the way and a mechanic appears. Seems I died in front of his shop. Now how lucky was that? They push me over and the mechanic looks at my car free of charge and shows me what the immediate and most obvious problem is. I ask him if he could repair it and how much it would be. Also luckily I had money on me. So he gets the car in the shop , fixes that problem and then they calls me over and shows me more stuff. No they didn't create any problems but it was so obvious, even to a car noob like me that this car was in extremely poor shape. They pointed out things that had been wrong for awhile. I thanked him and called the dealership where this friend of mine had bought the car. They are trying to wiggle out of their responsibility and say it was as is. Wheres their integrity. They sold him a piece of sh t. Do I have any recourse? I'm contacting the bureau of consumer affairs for the state but in the mean time here I am again carless :( .

Depending on the state you live in there can be a few laws that can help but unfortunately most States do allow car dealerships to sell pure garbage under the umbrella of an "as is" condition.

The first place to start would be to get with the guy who purchased the car and look at the paperwork. If there is anything there that says "as is" or something similar I would not waste my time even trying to fight with them. You could try getting your friend to take the car up there and try to talk reasonable with them. Most of even the cheap lots have basic mechanics and maybe they will work out a deal to do the work if you get the parts as a compromise.
