Should Anorexics be force fed?

I kinda need some points on this topic for a debate thing at school. Does anyone have any opinions on it?

The fact its a mental illness they should be treated and feeding will be one of them but not to the extent of which is causes the sufferer any distress.

Hmm. I didn't know it was an actual mental illness. Guess I learned something today, haha. And I agree with Stenners, not force fed, but treated.

i agree with matt, as its a mental illness anorexics should be force fed because they are not in control of their own mind. its like someone whos depressed and they take an overdose, would you let them die or would you treat them? i know what i'd do i'd treat them, same with anorexics.

You can't force them to eat....but you should support them and give them strength...

no, I dont think they should be forced.

No one should be forced for anything.

 

I think they need help for their inner selves. To make them understand and realize why exactly are they not eating and it usually comes form insecurity.

So they should be encouraged to eat but definetly not forced to.

Anorexics should be cured and treated. And if part of getting healthy again means force feeding them, so be it. And I mean, if they're at the point of the body eating itself up from lack of nurtrition, feed them. Are we going to sit theree and watch them die?

Agreed with a few points stressed here. Forcing someone to eat doesn't address the issues as to why they won't eat in the first place. You could all to easily turn an anorexic bullemic by using such heavy handed tactics.

Psychological councelling, along with a gradually increasing and medically supervised intravenous feed would work better - force feeding could run the risk of overloading an already depleted physical system - like returning hearing to the deaf and taking them to a rock concert... Besides, force feed them now and the moment you turn your back they'll go back to starving themselves again... Then what?

I don't think annorexia has anything to do with the eating.. main problem is self image I guess o.O they should build that up

Let me break it down for you.

If you force feed someone who's anorexic.

You cure them of anorexia.

And diagnose them with bulemia.

Why the hell is this in debate? Its called suppourt groups or treatment facilities. thoes work pretty much perfectly. if someone isnt in one and needs to be in one then just send them. plus u just cant leave someone to die becuase they wanna throw up. like sum1 said its a mental illness shit like OH itll kill you wouldnt stick

I say no let them be stupid and kills themselves but the other part of me says you don't wanna kill them...so idk...

Anorexia is a mental Illness, force feeding them wouldn't solve the root cause of their problem. It could even escalate to bulimia and the like.

You can force them to eat. If it comes to that and the person gets committed then they will stick a tube down your throat and force feed you. okay!? on whether it should happen or not. I think we should try to help them, but you cant just force a big amount of food into them because it could kill them. you have to slowly work it back into them from small amounts.
