Sin Taxes cause more harm

In a discussion I had today with some friends we were talking about "sin taxes" and how they will effect the average person who would pay the tax and how it will have the secondary harm of hurting families.

In recent years we have seen massive tax increases in things like tobacco products and even recent talk of more taxes for foods that are bad for you like the soda taxes that are proposed.

In my opinion those who are abusing these things are not going to stop abusing them just because we raise the taxes because those who are addicted to eating excessively and using tobacco are exactly that, addicted and if we crank up the cost, then these people will take money away from the care of their family to pay for their addictions. I can't tell you how often I see what appears to be poor people buying tobacco products while a baby wearing only a diaper is in their arms or still sitting in a running vehicle and not even in a car seat.

This goes back to my normal commentary that everything the liberals do actually hurts the people they claim to be trying to help. Cap and trade will hurt every poor household trying to heat their homes in the winter, but they want to do it anyway.

"It is 'sin' to pollute, so let's screw the poor people in the azz."

And yet, these same poor vote for thes guy pushing these agendas at every election.......I just don't understand that.

My biggest issues wiht these taxes is when those being taxed do actually stop "sinning."

Smoking is on the downturn, but many good, decent programs are funded by the taxes collected from smoking. How are these programs going to continue to be funded? Through raising of other taxes...

I have never seen a good or decent program operated by the Government.

There is always more harm done than is gained, not to mention a massive amount of money that has been wasted.

I say give all that money back to those who earned it and see some great things happen then.

I actually prefer regressive taxes over progressive ones. It at least makes the bums who benefit from government programs pay a bit back.

I have said for a long time now that the problem is not so much the programs themselves but the lack of people qualified to run them that is the biggest problem. People smart enough to operate these programs well would never work for the Government. That level of skill will equal ten times (and more) the income in the private sector.
