It seems to me that debate on here just turns into this insult contest in which two or three or four idiots decides to use insults like "dunghead" to prove president Bush is gay. I am frankly tired of it.

 

On the "God hates fags" thread, OTC brings up another subject entirely, to which lethalfind and NazzNegg reply, thus hijacking the thread and turning it into parental responsibility and gun banning, which devolves into throwing insults at each other.

 

And then they take their lovely pump action to the nearest pre school.

 

And on the "Solution for Single Mothers" thread, Hugh G. kind of strays, but that doesn't bring the thread down. It happens when lethalfind, not really offering anything other than "blah blah guy had no prior signs of abusiveness", resorted to insults. She said something about a blowup doll to hugo.

 

(It'll be ironic if this subject changes as the thread goes along)

So where the hell has debate gone? I have no clue. I just know that when members like Bart123 were on here, debates seemed to be more informative, more enlightened. They used to be about shit that most of the people on here wouldn't understand(including me at times). You actually learned more from the arguments. Were there insults? Not many. And those who did things like that were generally looked down upon as morons, because they brought nothing to debates.

 

It's almost getting to where debate at GF is non-existant. Sure, we have intelligent debates sometimes, but generally after the first 10 posts or so, we come to the other side of the tracks, so to speak. This tends to be where those who are outcasts come to try and make us like them by insulting one of the members. This has done nothing but made us feel annoyed.

 

Is this a valid representation of the spirit of GF? No, it isn't. GF is supposed to be about debating intelligently and using facts to backup what you say, being an asshole sometimes, and just having fun. But it is kind of hard to have fun when such people as MM try to just annoy the fuck out of you without actually contributing. It would be nice to have debates where those who contributed actually knew what they were talking about and gave an informed opinion, backed by facts. This doesn't seem to happen as much as it used to.

I've stopped being any ind of a regular poster because of this very reason. Threads start, 2 or 3 people will say SOMETHING (which isn't nothing) then nothing will be said, the cycle perpetuates itself with perhaps the odd repeating of the initial statments. I originally tried ignoring the nothing posts but they are viral and work their way around quickly (Snafu for example said something good and then tagged onto the wiener contest line of thought).

 

Yah the insults have an odd place but continuing them is bullshit. The member's lounge is for chit-chat, I want to be proven wrong.

 

It is a downfall of online communities, once member get to know eachother well enough it becomes more of a friendly or not so friendly exchange between characters as opposed to a faceless being spouting information against your own.

The point isn't at all over the West Minster system, nor about fiery fights. Arguments are too often degenerated into insult contests. Facts are sledom presented, especially after the first few posts. Derailing into, not another subject, but some irrelevant rambling such as wiener competitions is commonplace. Opinions are presented in a very lazy mannor usually as a simple statment. Counterpoints are often ignored and/or dismissed with lines such as "Thats the dumbest thing I ever heard, smarten up". Subjects such as Islam and its relation to the rest of the world are cycled over and over and over leading to stale posts etc etc...

 

Gotta be critical of ourselves too you know...

Sorry, I'm not hugo, and thusly, I don't think the majority of this sites members are idiots. If I felt that way, I assure you I wouldn't be here.

 

All I am saying is that it is apparent that some members what more serious debates out of the debate section. and I frankly don't think that is to much to ask. I love tossing insults as much as anyone, but insults have no place at all in a debate. Debates should be filled with facts, viewpoints, discussion about the topic at hand. Not what they normally turn into.

At my old site (and carried over to the site I mod at now) we have a section called "Serious Discussion" where all replies must be relevant and on topic of hte post made, or they will be deleted. For those that want the serious discussion, it is great. If you don't mind a hijacked post or random goofiness, then you make your post in a different catergory.

 

But it would require more work from your mod team to pull that off in the debate section, if they are interested in it.

To debate with someone, I have to respect that persons input. I might not like them or want to hang with them but they can still contribute something of value. Obviously we all have different points of view and contribute that.

However, there are people who I have no respect for their opinion, so what would be the point in debating anything with them?
