Some good 5min meals?

At present I'm eating a simple plate of mashed potatoes with broken speghetti noodles and spices because the house is presently barren of food. But really, I love these things!

So just for *****, giggles and new-ideas sake; What are your favorite simple dishes that you toss together when you're feeling lazy or (like me) out of "Real" food?

Or maybe some horror stories of things you tried to toss up but were absolutly horrid. (Once ate deep fired flour with a bit of lemon juice for flavour. My bro is a ****** cook when he's out of money!)

And Lets try to exclude Mac and Cheese from this one :D

Hm...I'm pretty good at this, I used to get stuck working late and often times wouldn't get home until after 6.

Chicken scallopine-season flour with salt, pepper, garlic powder, douse thin chicken ******* in it, cook in olive oil (usually about five minute cooking time), add some lemon juice (sometimes I add white wine as well) and its done.

Pasta with diced tomatoes-take a can of diced tomatoes (I keep several cans of them, usually seasoned with garlic and onion) throw it into a pan with garlic and olive oil, cook at med-high heat, add some sugar and wine vinegar, pour over pasta. Zesty, light, quick, and chock full of vitamins and antioxidants. Bonus if you use whole wheat pasta.

No time to make cream sauce? Toss some noodles with sour cream and parmesan cheese. For fun, you can add garlic powder or poppy seeds.

Tuna melts-yummy. Tuna, swiss cheese, and some tomato popped into the toaster oven. Even better if you can get those individual sized baguettes.

Doctored up tomato soup-use 75% milk, 25% water. Add a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce, and a good pinch of brown sugar. If you're feeling REALLY ambitious, finely dice some onions, saute, and add to soup.

Quickie alternative to twice baked potatoes-make mashed potatoes (I prefer to use salted butter and heavy cream). If no heavy cream on hand, use sour cream. Add cheese, bacon, and some snipped chives, and voila. Delicious.

(I know some of this stuff seems a bit ridiculous, but I never have an empty kitchen, lol)

I can make a meal out of just about anything. Leftovers are SUCH a blessing.

Ooh....add some frozen peas to macaroni and cheese. Yum!

Tuna noodle cassarole is quick to fix, though not 5 minutes,

Tacos are real fast too, I can have lettuced chopped, cheese shredded and onion and tomatos diced all while cooking the hamburger.

Then there is always tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich, or perhaps you could make a grilled HAM and Cheese which is always good..

Grilled ham and cheese is great. Especially if you use leftover spiral ham. I like to have some handy (I make a 7 lb ham for the two of us, and freeze the majority of it).

The secret to quick meals is to keep your freezer stocked. I generally keep entire meals, or main ingredients, stocked in the freezer. Ham, garbanzo beans, spaghetti sauce with meatballs/sausage, lasagna/stuffed shells, beef stew, marinated meats....Makes life much easier. Stick it in the fridge the night before, when you get home, heat and serve.

When I was in Dallas last my brother took me to this Vietnamese restuarant, they had the most wonderful soup...

I throw together my simple rendition.

I use Ramen noodles, fresh broccoli, and chicken breast, I add a little soy sauce and a couple dashes of Tabasco, just enough to make your lips tingle.

Why are Americans so disperpotionately disconnected from their meals? I love to cook and I can't see why the **** people don't have 15-30 minutes to cook something that is'nt pre-fab factory cranked gruel. And so many wonder why our children are pathetic fat little creeps. Fat kids actualy make me sick to my stomach. I see these mammoth children walking like it requires so much effort to do so, and I remember running all day as a child.

Whooooa there cowboy...I think this is just an "emergency meals" thread. Believe me, I generally spend much more than 5 minutes on cooking (unless I'm reheating leftovers). I love to cook. It's like stress relief for me.

But you are right. Most people are too lazy to cook nowadays. You should see some of the **** the kids at work get sent for lunches. We have a few who eat spaghetti-o's EVERY DAY. It's sad.

I think we all run into the issue of having to prepare dinner in a hurry. But I see all these ridiculas products at the grocery store that encourage laziness to an extreme. I prefer taste over speed anytime.

Yeah, like those frozen meal in a bag? Loaded with fat, sodium, preservatives...all kinds of bad stuff. I don't see the big deal about getting off your lazy **** and cooking. No time after work? Throw it in a crock pot. Or prepare everything ahead of time so all you have to do is actually cook, which generally doesn't take much time unless you're making a roast, or something similar that takes hours on end.

I like to shop at Costco and buy in bulk. That means I almost always have something frozen. I have all kinds of things in there to break out if there is an emergancy. I hate to grocery shop. I have 3 different sizes of storage bags to put up things I buy.

Its a bad habit my daughter and I have gotten into but we rarely ever sit down and eat at the table together. Normally we end up eating at different times.

Definatly, if you know that you won't have the time (Regularly anyhow) then cook ahead of time. But every now and then I just want to toss something in a pot for a couple of minutes and fill my stomache. I generally refraine from quick fix items (I NEVER eat microwave bullshit meals) But I'll admit to LOVING Mr Noodles or Mac and Cheese.

But the idea here was, as you said angie, for quick fix eats that you make yourself. Although I too love cooking something kick-***, whenever I'm rushed or lazy I keep things quite simple.

Pita Pizza is a pretty standerd one. Just slab some tomato sauce of sorts onto a pita, put on whatever vegies you like then hammer the thing with cheese! Stick it in an over for 5-10 min an you've a quick and delicous meal.

For pizza, I like to use English Muffins and use them as the base for pizza, you can make them quickly and each one to order for whomever is there. Then you don't have to fight over what toping to have for everyone.
