xXMelancholiaXx
I saw another thread similar to this but it almost 2 years old. So I figured it was maybe time for another thread to see what the opinions of people are or what not. Here’s my list of my best and worst. BEST: 1.Evanescence - They hardly need any introduction. I'd say they're one of the few bands that manage to mix different styles of music together but actually sound good in the end. I don't think labeling them as nu metal is necessarily correct. I'd say they're more like Alternative Metal with some Gothic Metal leanings. Another thing I like about them is that they are an excellent bridge band and have the potential to get listeners out of just listening to mainstream nu metal and into listening to some more darker obscure music. (Within Temptation, Xandria, After Forever etc) 2. Spineshank - I never hear any mention of this nu metal band I have to say they're one of the best ones out there. I'm not sure if they are disbanded or are on hiatus. But they're music is definitely a lot better then the most mainstream nu metal bands that get all the attention. They blend nu metal with a bit of industrial rock. I never really got why these guys never really became all that popular. 3. Otep - I don't really know how to describe Otep. They're very similar to Slipknot. Only they're way better. They pretty much definite in my opinion what aggressive nu metal should have sounded like. Unfortunately like a lot of bands they never got the attention they should have got. 4. Linkin Park - Linkin Park is hard to describe. I think they're one of those bands that you're either you really like or you really hate. Now I don't think they're all that talented as they do have that potential to become boring and repetitive over time, but they're good at what they do. Other bands worth mentioning Mudvayne WORST: 1. KoRn - I really don't know where to start with KoRn. You'd think that the "pioneers" of the nu metal genre would be the best but you'd be wrong here. Personally out of all the nu metal bands I've listened to KoRn still remains to be the worst. I thought I'd give them another shot because one of my friends he likes them so I let him recommend to me a few songs and pretty much all of them were terrible. If every nu metal bands sounded like this, not saying that nu metal is a great genre to begin with, then I'm sure it would have died over night instead of over the course of a few years. 2. Limp Bizkit - Like KoRn I'd say these guys are one of the worst nu metal bands I've heard. Their popularity is completely unjustified. If you're looking for Rap Rock you're better off going with Linkin Park. 3. Disturbed - You know I actually use to like this band some what. The problem with Disturbed is well there boring. I don't think they're necessarily "bad" though they just don't have a lot of replay value to them. I guess this band is really up to the listener to decide. I can understand why people would like them though. 4. Deftones - I have mixed feelings about this band. They feel like a mixture of KoRn and Disturbed for some odd reason. I can't say I'm too fond of them either. They're pretty generic and uninteresting like most nu metal bands. Other bands worth mentioning: Coal Chamber System of a Down Papa Roach Staind Slipknot Quote http://www.sucksbbs.net/data/MetaMirrorCache/419f660d5f873320ab8475e194977ce5.gif
DarknessLover
i dont completely agree with everything but like Disturbed i re-listen to alot. You do bring up alot of good ones too. Quote The Park is Back? No way!
LPShinodaFM
I agree with most of what you say, but some i cannot say much because i do not know much of the band. I think what you said about Evanescence is very true, and how they can be um... semi-mainstream with their variety of songs. And i do like that band. I respect your opinion about LP, but i definitely felt the true-ness in what you wrote about Korn. I listened to them expecting their music to be good because of their pioneer-ness... but it didn't turn out to be so. Limp Bizkit is a meh. Well, there's my opinion. xXMelancholiaXx
i dont completely agree with everything but like Disturbed i re-listen to alot. You do bring up alot of good ones too. Very few Nu metal bands really draw me back to them and make me listen to them again and again. Most of them tend to just fade out of my play list and I eventually just forget about them until some body brings them up. The only Disturbed song I’d even bother listening to now a days is Voices which I will admit is a great song a side from that I don’t really listen to them. I agree with most of what you say, but some i cannot say much because i do not know much of the band. I think what you said about Evanescence is very true, and how they can be um... semi-mainstream with their variety of songs. Evanescence is probably one of the more obscure mainstream bands. Their music isn’t exactly “mainstream” to begin with. They almost walk thin line between being more underground then mainstream. As most mainstream bands don’t play a lot of dark music like they do. This is why I call them the perfect bridge band. but i definitely felt the true-ness in what you wrote about Korn. I listened to them expecting their music to be good because of their pioneer-ness... but it didn't turn out to be so. Limp Bizkit is a meh. You know when I heard Coming Undone I thought it was pretty good. So I decided that I would give KoRn another chance but they don’t have any other good songs. It’s ridiculous I just can’t understand it. I even listened to their “acclaimed song” Freak on a Leash. I could barely stomach it. The fact this song is on the Top 40 Metal songs discredits the whole list. Now Limp Bizkit is just awful seriously. The only good song I’ve heard from them is Nookie and that isn't saying much. I don’t like them enough or even remotely care for them enough to find any other decent songs. Stenners
Not that I have aged and matured, I dont think the ever was a best of the Nu-Metal genre, some where a lil less annoying than others. Evanescence is shockingly mainstream, like a poor mans Lacuna Coil (who are far better) they chart all the time, how can they not be mainstream? There massive sound has litterally thousands of dollars thrown at it because the record label knows it will sell well, not to mention 'Wind Up' a sub division of 'Sony BMG' is hardly what I call an 'Independant' or 'Underground' label. They blend nu metal with a bit of industrial rock. I never really got why these guys never really became all that popular. They have broken up in 2004, and the singer is in a new band called Silent Civilian wich is a heavy metal band, and i believe the rest of Spineshank was looking for a new singer or they already have found one and working on an album but i don't know:) Quote ιη тнє ѕιℓєη¢є σƒ тнє ∂αякηєѕѕ
Peterdea
the best is Taproot, Deftones, TRUSTcomapny, Linkin Park, KoRN adn i could go on and on the worst is Slipknot, Taproot (when they first started. they tried too much to sound like Limp Bizkit, after that with their albums Gift and Welcome were awesome), Limp Bizkit, Evanescence, Grade 8, Otep (Almost to a point where i throw up). hows that? I can't say I'm too fond of them either. They're pretty generic and uninteresting like most nu metal bands. Other bands worth mentioning: Coal Chamber System of a Down Papa Roach Staind Slipknot I haven't heard Evanescence's new album, but I don't consider what they did on the first album that much numetal, as you do say. Everyone was comparing them to LP, they do have a similar sound sometimes, but all in all it's a totally different thing. Deftones can't be considered numetal anymore. And they've always been more than just numetal. Even on the first album. I can't believe you call them generic when they've been both pioneering the genre, and on the other hand going into different directions these other numetal bands aren't close to being exploring. Just take Saturday Night Wrist. Korn...okay tricky one. I really do like some of their songs, but the last album, see you on something, sucked. I used to like their older stuff a lot, but me listening to them somehow didn't last. Limp Bizkit...okay everyone hates them now it seems. Not me. There's a lot to critisize about them but at the end of the day (to me) they make songs that I like to blast on my player after a hard day's work. RMV has been called the worst album ever or something, but I liked how they did explore some new things. The EP they released was a good step for them too. No publicity, no commercials, not shit, they just put the EP out. But now they've split I think...unless they replace Wes somehow... They have released some tracks on their myspace, with a kind of electronic feel some of them, and that's something I liked to see. Slipknot are a bit over the top sometimes for my personal taste, but I do think they have something to offer for me as a listener. xXMelancholiaXx
Evanescence is shockingly mainstream, like a poor mans Lacuna Coil (who are far better) they chart all the time, They may chart all the time but that doesn't mean they necessarily have a mainstream sound. When I think of mainstream, I think of pseudo heavy metal bands (Disturbed, KoRn) and pop punk bands. (My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte). I can't think of any of the mainstream bands that sound remotely like them. It's funny how everybody compares them to Lacuna Coil. Evanescence sounds more like Within Temptation or Leaves' Eyes. Now Lacuna Coil initially started not sounding anything like Evanescence but their newest album Karmacode that sounds like Evanescence. People think Evanescence sounds like Lacuna Coil when it's actually Lacuna Coil that sounds like Evanescence now. It's almost ironic. If Evanescence stopped throwing (nu metallish) songs like Call me when you're sober into the albums I'd say they pretty much sounded exactly like Within Temptation, After Forever, or Leaves' Eyes instead of somewhat like them.
