SAN ANTONIO -- Two days after a San Antonio mother was arrested for
smothering her 4-year-old daughter to death, another local mother was
arrested on charges that she attacked her 8-year-old daughter in a similar
way.
KSAT's Charles Gonzalez reported that police went to the apartment of Ann
Marie Burlock, 30, after getting a call from a concerned relative.
The relative told police that Burlock's 8-year-old daughter had frantically
called to say that her mom was trying to smother and choke her.
"She had some redness on her neck, (and) there were some pillows thrown on
the floor, which would give credence to what she was saying," San Antonio
police Sgt. Gabe Trevino said.
Police responded to the apartment Thursday in the 8000 block of Midcrown on
the city's northeast side at about 10:20 p.m.
When they arrived, they said they found the injured child along with pillows
on the floor.
Police said Burlock was intoxicated and belligerent with them. She was
arrested on site, and police said they recovered several items at the home
after getting a search warrant a short while after the initial call.
"The message is that these kids can't defend themselves. We're certainly
going to be there to defend them once we know about a case like this, and
that's exactly what occurred last night," Trevino said. "We're glad we got
the call from the person this child made the outcry to. That's how we get
involved; we have to know about it."
Burlock's daughter was placed in the custody of a relative, possibly the
same one she called for help on Thursday night. Child Protective Services
has been notified, police said.
Burlock was charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony, and she
is in jail under $15,000 bond.
